scott who's at the ron walters chair at howard university, she talks about shirley chissolm and carrie moseley braun. the only african-american woman elected to the senate in the history of the senate. and that was 20 years ago. then, of course, she made the first campaign in the 20th century for the democratic nomination to run for the president of the united states. so african-american women understand their politics not just being rationized or gendered, but civically engaged that all person, whether they are latino immigrants, legal or illegal, whether they be working below minimum wage, that all persons have a civic responsibility to be counted as equal. so i think in light of the next six years we're looking at, and the lame duck presidential administration right now and possibly a female candidate in 2016, there are a lot of issues that we really need to engage beyond the issue of race, but we can't ignore the issue of race. and right now the issue of race has turned green. it's a matter of poverty. we have people working beneath poverty level. and usually children who are aband

. >> host: ron paul, you list your parents is one of your biggest influences. who were they? >> guest: howardthey were both from pittsburgh. they met in lutheran church in committees. but much in carnegie, pennsylvania, the other in washington and his third and my dad had a small dairy and i have four brothers and we sort of helped are currently through college by being milkmen. they had an influence on me mostly on gentleness and also an understanding of the work aspect. you didn't expect much. we are all born during the depression and then there's world war ii, which i remember very clearly. things are pretty depressed in world war ii because there were and there wasn't much prosperity until after that. there is a strong need for your work ethic. we had to go out and deliver milk and power lines in things like that. i think sometimes what you get from your parents is sort of the subtleness. to me it was gentleness. there is no yelling and screaming and beatings. even when i did things they shouldn't have been doing, there wasn't any harshness and i always thought that was a good standard to
