let's go out to nbc's ron mott. he's in daytona beach, florida, for us right now. so what does it look like where you are, ron? >> reporter: athere, alex. good morning. you were just talking about the storm surge. that's the number one concern in this part of florida, all up and down the storm zone on the atlantic coast, because that is what usually is responsible for killing the most people in these hurricanes. we got a little bit of good news in that 11:00 update last night in that forecast track is calling for the eye, when it gets up near daytona beach to be a little further east over the atlantic ocean. so that should mean we don't see some of the strongest winds around the eyewall itself, 120, 130 miles per hour. we anticipate we'll see winds approaching 90, maybe even 100 miles per hour once the eye gets closer to this area. the bad news is the timing. this thing is moving forward at about 13 miles per hour. still about 150 or so miles away from daytona beach. so that puts us around high tide. the next high tide, 12:45 eastern time. that's when we could see t

nbc's ron mott is with us from daytona beach. ron, it looks like it's even stronger than the last time i checked with you. what can you tell us? >> reporter: good morning, ari. it's starting to get a little tougher to stand up right here, with tends with swirling the way it is, just outside our hotel. remarkably, the power is still on, at least in this part of daytona beach. we're crossing our fingers that we make it through the rest of the night, with the power not likely. once the winds pick up stronger, you'll see it flicker on and off. and while the wind is a problem, it's always the storm surge that are the potential deadly threat they bring. we're expecting 7 to 11 feet for storm surge. we got a little bit of good news. the eye, the projected forecast for the eye to be a little further out over the water. that's great news. the problem is, by the time the eye gets up here, it will be right around high tide. so it's going to be much higher and we an tess pate that water will find ways inland into the intercoastal waterway. so

>> ari, right now we're about 70 miles south of where ron mott was here. we have about 10,000 people without power so far. we had evacuations that started at 3 p.m. yesterday and now we're facing the brunt of the hurricane. the eye is just off the eastern coast on the south part of the county we're in in brevard county, florida, a 73-mile-long county, where cape canaveral and co co beach located. most emergency service workers are off the road right now, that includes paramedics, firefighters and people who normally respond to an emergency say it's far too dangerous to be on the roads right now. the wind speeds are too dangerous when they get up to 50 miles per hour, those are speeds that can blow the ambulances and fire trucks off the road. they are on a very limited basis responded. we have had some residents sending messages washing they had evacuated from the evacuation zone on the barrier islands but at this point there's no one to get them. >> david, what do you do from here out? is it your hope, then, that it is power loss and those knipe of issues

stephanie. >> ron mott there for us in daytona beach. re seeing now is what we saw here an hour or two ago here in melbourne. you mentioned -- ron mentioned the intercoastal waterway, maybe a quarter mile from where i am right now. last night, that was one of the chief concerns. folks who live along the waterway, have businesses along the waterway, when those waters begin to rise, in daytona, the same concern existing here in melbourne as well. this is an area, stephanie, this is an area that has dealt with weather like this before. but it has been some time since they have seen a storm potentially as catastrophic as this one. it was 2004 when they saw not one, not two, but three hurricanes in the same season, 2004 into the 2005, hurricane ivan being one of the most devastating of those storms. that storm affected people in such a deep, guttural way. last night, we would have conversations and that was the first thing that folks wanted to talk about. 2004, 2005, was this going to be as bad as that one was. we should have a good idea over

joining me now, nbc news ron motte who is in daytona beach. ron, you're driving around daytona beach which is also, as i understand it, an area under mandatory evacuation. what are you seeing? >> reporter: well, we're just -- we decided to take a quick ride while we can still do this, chris, so we're on the main north/south drag for all the folkses who know daytona beach. this is the beach, just to our east by a half a block or so. this is what officials, if you take a look outside, this is what they want to see is very little to no traffic at this moment. we have seen a sporadic car or two pass us, and we do know that further down the road, there is a police officer stopping vehicles making sure that they know to get inside and that they're not out here joyriding trying to be a part of this storm. we can tell you that a lot of the businesses along atlantic avenue here have not boarded up and maybe they're taking a chance thinking that if this storm, if the eye of the storm stays to our east, and over the water, that we would have pretty much s
