our discussion now, ron klain, former chief of staff to joe biden, and most importantly tonight he was also the chief council for the senate judiciary committee during the clarence thomas, anita hill hearings. and lisa graves is with us also a former chief counsel for nominations for the democrats on the senate judiciary committee and was a deputy assistant attorney general in the department of justice. and ron, let's start with you. i know you've been thinking about those days 27 years ago, and those of us who were watching from the outside couldn't quite believe what we were seeing. what one of the reasons for it it seems to me is the committee like all the rest of the committees in the senate have never quite figured out how do you decide in that room whether an accuser has reached an adequate standard of proof. >> that's right, lawrence. and look, back then robert seabird, the great dean of the senate, great institutionalist, it has to be protected as an institution. if there's a doubt, the doubt should be resolved in favor of making sure we have the right people on the supreme court. that his view. >> so, ron, just to translate that for a second. the doubt should

joining us is ron clan, former chief of staff to biden and gore and former chief counsel to the senate judiciary committee during the clarence thomasearings. barbara mcquade is still with us. let me start with you and your thoughts about, not just where this nomination stands. it seems to be in serious jeopardy, but the conduct of the president and the republicans seems to be to allow no prospect, no possibility that these allegations, which as detailed in "the washington post" last week, couldn't be read any other week than as credible. >> yeah, i think they've -- i think what that says about their view about women in these claims is one thing but as a matter of process, it's hard to explain. i was chief counsel of the senate judiciary committee when democrats controlled it and george h.w. bush was president. we sent it to the fbi, the white house. a conservative white house counsel sent it on to the fbi. and the fbi ran it to ground. the assistance by the trump white house and by the republicans on the judiciary committee that the fbi would not be brought in to look into this charge, to look in the other information that's coming

ron. is that advisable? >> it's not only advisable, it seems to me absolutely essential. >> would they gragree to that, though? >> well, with they should agree to it. look, during the thomas/hill hearings, 22 witnesses testified. not just thomas and hill, but 22 other witnesses who had information about the two of them and their backgrounds and their experiences together and times they saw them together. and here we know there's at least one other people in this room when this assault allegedly happened. there are other people both kavanaugh and ford may have talked to. if you don't hear from the witnesses, you're not having a hearing. if you don't hear from the people who have information, you're not seeking the truth. so the idea of excluding people with relevant information seems more like a railroad than a hearing to me. >> the other piece of this, as i mentioned this outside investigation, right, this is what professor ford has wanted, dana. and we were looking back from the anita hill days, from '91, senator grassley is the chairman of the committee. and he said this at the time. roll it. >> a rule like this should ensure once and for all that even an 11th hour char
