carl rove and the director of the ronald ragan institute. thank you for joining us in this special conversation. how do you see the defense posture shifting or changing under a second trump administration? >> the reagan foundation did an excellent poll which helps guides them. the american people deeply concerned today. supporting additional spending. they want america to lead and be involved in the world. 50% said they want america to be more involved in the world. maintain basis overseas. sixty-two americans said they were in favor. 62% of trump voters. there is a natural feeling that america is moving at a dangerous rate in the way to bring about peace and prosperity is strength >> people think we need better defense production. do we need a lot more 40%. you are at 70% of the people who think we have to ramp it up. our resources are being tied across many different battlefield at this point. >> congressman gallagher is right. we need to perform in more production. the american people are comfortable with investing in national defense. co

peggy: writing in the speechwriting department ronald ragan -- ronald reagan.eter: how did you get from fairleigh dickinson to this beach writing -- speechwriting department of the white house? peggy: i went to new york newspapers and asked if i could be a writer, i will start anywhere but i would really like to be a columnist and they last -- they laughed and said honey, new york is where you end up if you have done well, it's not where you start out. i had just graduated college, a friend of mine wrote me a note from boston, she had just lost a roommate. and after college the way i was making my living was as a temporary secretary. executives in the old days would have a secretary who might go on vacation for a month or leave and have a baby and they needed a temporary secretary to hold on the job and answer the phone. i had a bunch of those jobs. one was that the cbs broadcast center in new york. i took the bus every day for new jersey. at the cbs broadcast center in new york i was looking for a fellow who worked in the human relations area, a great guy. the

off his campaign against ronald regan who we still hoped was too far to the right to get elected, but when i watched the news that night i was blown away by the sight of raganberty. >> the carter record is a litany of despair, of broken promises, of sacred trusts abandoned and forgotten. >> with show business flair, ragan had stolen the spotlight and the cherished national symbol from a sitting president. still, hopes were pinned on gaining the release of the hostages before election day. >> mr. president, what about the hostages? they're talking about an imminent release. >> we hope they'll be released but we don't know when it will be. >> but it was not to be. >> the exact anniversary of the hostages being taken was election day so it was impossible for any american voter to forget that jimmy carter has let our 50 some hostages stay in captivity. >> i was aboard air force one after his final campaign rally in seattle. the crowd had been enthusiastic and we were still hoping that president carter would pull it off until his team back in washington called the plane with the latest poll results. >> we said, not good, mr. president. it's over. and he said, ok
