you have ronald reagan, the cold warrior. you have gorbachev that grew up in communism and obviously worked his way through that system. two men who you couldn't imagine were going to come together and begin to trust each other. did reagan -- did they change each other? did they come to their decisions to negotiate independently because of what was going on in their countries? what do you think was happening that brought this incredible thing to change the world together? >> it's certainly true that you can't imagine two more different leaders coming together to do such historic things as they did 20, 25 years ago. i think having studied history, that great leaders are political figures who transend their former selves when confronted with some historic opportunity. i think that was the case of reagan and gorbachev. when gorbachev came to power in march 1985, he already had these ideas that would lead to an attempt to end the cold war. i don't think it was ended, but you haven't asked me yet. >> go ahead. take it where you wa

so this is ronald reagan up close and personal. >> dr. skinner? >> thank you. when i was searching around to think about what i could say, i thought i wanted to direct my comments to mrs. reagan and tell you a little bit of a back story about how all this came about. it was never really to happen, the books that the andersons and i have done in the past couple of years. and in the fall of 1995, mrs. reagan attended the conference in this very room that was open to the public, celebrating the 10th anniversary of the geneva conference and the first meeting that reagan had with gorbachev. and i attended that seminar and rushed up to her and said i would love to interview for my work. she says i don't allow interviews. but by christmas, i wrote her a long letter about my interest in studying the end of the cold war. and by the spring i had met her and she had granted me access to president reagan's papers for my work on the end of the cold war with the support of secretary schultz. and she's still asking for that book. but along the way, i started finding thousands

the man said ronald reagan could get a standing ovation in a graveyard. now, had it not been for that speech in kansas city that night, which really helped reagan salvage a losing campaign, there might not have been a reagan campaign in 1980. there might not have been a reagan presidency and there might not have been a tear down this wall speech which is the subject of my book, and my remarks here tonight. what i want to do tonight is briefly, if i can, talk about some of the factors that contributed to the fall of the berlin wall, the end of the cold war, which i think stands today as a high water marks of u.s. foreign policy in the second half of the 20th century. so i'm going to sketch out a little bit -- some background of the speech. the context in which it was given. i want to explain why reagan's speech was such a pivotal event, and then i'd like to suggest some ways in which the end of the cold war has relevance to the challenges that face us today. brn i begin, i do want to just make a couple of points of personal privilege. i'm from new york, and
