the report is laid out in graphic detail in the new yorker by ronan farrow and jane mar row, hours after dr. christine blasey-ford agreed to appear on thursday to tell her story of sexual assault by brett kavanaugh. >> alleging kavanaugh exposed himself to her at a drunken dorm party when they were at a party in the early '80s, thrusting his genitals in her face, causing her to touching it. this hearing set to take place thursday morning 10:00 a.m. jeff, remind me again in terms of where your head is at on this. we look at these new allegations, is there a chance that this changes anything, moving forward to thursday? >> well, i think, remember, this is a political process, not a legal process, and politics -- and everything affects politics. and, you know, the issue here is, is brett kavanaugh going to get confirmed? there's a handful of votes in play, it seems. susan collins, lisa murkowski, perhaps jeff flake. and it seems to me that these allegations do affect whether those senators will vote to confirm kavanaugh. and, you know, we're going to have to see how credible the two witness

i think what ronan had to say is pretty important. you'll hear from the white house this week that there are not enough people to corroborate that this event happened. they're calling into question this entire series of accusations against kavanaugh. yesterday, we saw kavanaugh put out a statement, calling this a smear campaign against him. so, clearly here the white house is trying to change the thrust of the story, making it less about the accusations and more about what they consider to be a coordinated campaign to bring down their nominee. by thursday, we will have a hearing, including ford where she testifies before the senate judiciary committee. clearly, this issue not going away at all. poppy and jim? >> that is the plan for now. although the ranking democrat on the judiciary committee, dianne feinstein, has said delay, delay, after this second accusation came forward. abby, thanks for the reporting at the u.n. huge day there as the general assembly gets under way. our manu raju is on the hill. so many more questions this morn

david: another nbc story is ronan farrow and a producer who left nbc, it was the top brass trying toronan farrow had to leave nbc to report on it and presented it to the "new yorker" magazine. >> the #metoo story is one of the biggest pieces of journalism done this year. any journalist would be proud to go after a villain like harvey weinstein. but nbc tried to kill this thing so many so that ronan farrow had to leave the network and go to the "new yorker" to publish it. they were stopping them from doing interviews. they weren't even allowed to do the interview with the sources they were looking to pursue. nbc reported to have threatened ronan that he wasn't able to take his reporting with him when he left nbc. this is bad news all around. and further evidence there is a culture of corruption at nbc that is negatively affecting their ability to do good journalism. david: neil armstrong, i just reported on it before. the movie that avoid planting the american flag because it was a worldwide achievement according to the lead actor. >> what does ryan gosling know. he has no stake tonig

welcome back to the newshour, ronan.ant to begin by asking you about thoses dozen women across both reports. give me a sense of what stood out to you by their stories and consistencies you saw across what they told you. >> well, often in a body of reporting like this there is a hich you realize there are too many stories with too many similarities in the factsfo patter it to be coincidental. these are not women that were in touch with each oter, there was no coordination, and yet they were producing uncannily slar details about molestation b less moonves. the other thing in talking with them is how serious the misconduct was. we are talking about multiple alleges that would meet the department of justice'sfi tion of rape, multiple allegations of serious sexual assault, forced oral x and finally there is a theme running through these stories of reclliation. womeiming that their careers were destroyed after they rejected less man ves. >> st worth mentioning, of course, in response to your report late on sunday mr. moonves

supervisor ronan? -ronen. >> supervisor h. ronen: thank you. like elsewhere in the police code it allows the police to enforce the buffer zone law without first providing a written warning. it make it's consistent with the rest of the code but emboldened by this president and increasingly pro-life supreme court, the protests outside of planned parenthood have become bigger and more aggressive. i have been working on this legislation for a long time. my predecessor first created a 25 foot buffer zone which was overturned by supreme court in massachusetts. we then amended the ordinance to prevent people from harassing and following women within a buffer zone in front of a reproductive health clinic and that law remains on the books. but what we are finding, there is sort of a cat-and-mouse game that's played between the protestors and the police. the police have to witness the conduct when it's happening and then they have to look down and write a written warning and that's making it very difficult to enforce. so this is a simple fix. it provides

mollie: ronan farrow had a good reputation.ing this story that a lawyer helped her work on after she was reached out to by senate democrats. it makes it look like his previous journalism was in question if he thought this was credible without corroboration from anybody. and it weakened the overall case against kavanaugh. they took a plausible story and each story after that became more ridiculous. howie: you go to the story and there it is, a big flashing red light, her memory contains gaps. after assessing her memories and consulting with her attorneys. but the new yorker under time pressure did publish it. susan: as reporters we go through these things with a fine tooth comb. what can you remember when she heard the name brett. was she sure it was brett kavanaugh. coming on the heels of the original accusations from ford. she is a yale graduate. howie: she was on the record. the "new york times" looked at the same story and the "times" reports to its readers. we interviewed several dozen people to corroborate her story. then

note that "the new yorker" writer ronan fair ronan farrow e mayer couched the allegation saying "senate democrats investigate new allegation of sexual misconduct from brett kavanaugh's college years." so whatever the democrats are investigating, it lacks a witness, the "the new yorker" as that no one witnessed this alleged incident. in fact, ramirez's roommate, who claims that they shared everything, heard nothing of it. the only person that the dynamic journalistic duo of barrow and mayer could find to substantiate the claims really didn't. >> the corroborating witness that you says has all the details including kavanaugh's name, where did that witness come from and where did they get the information about this from, if that person doesn't know ramirez? >> he remembers that -- he was in the same dorm, same little building on yale's old campus. he remembers it clearly. i asked him, we were going to be very careful -- he heard it from someone who was there. >> laura: he heard it from someone and a small little dorm on the old campus. great reporting. enter stage left the old gray lady, "

i had heard from the very beginning from when ronan's story first broke a couple of weeks ago that he actually initiated exit negotiations when the second story broke it became untenable for him to stay. and just moments ago we heard from cbs and the controlling shareholder national amusements that he is indeed stepping down. the c.o.o. of the company is taking over and perhaps most importantly the statement says that $20 million of the severance due to leslie moonves is going to organizations that support me too. that's pretty significant. the controlling shareholder is the person running the controlling shareholder of cbs is a woman. they are adding six new directors to the board of cbs. and already three women there. they're adding three more. so that says how seriously the cbs directors have taken the situation. some have alleged they weren't taking the situation very seriously at all given that leslie moonves didn't step down. he wasn't suspended by the board in any way when those allegations first broke. >> hasn't that been the knock on cbs? ronan farrow reported in part that a

but they knew that ronan farrow might hurt them if they killed the story.f course, in the end, hero did hurt them badly. they knew that that might happen, but they killed it anyway. why did they do that? we decided to investigate this question and we did. we spoke to a number of people with direct knowledge of the story and here's what we got.ha harvey weinstein had a long a documented history of using private investigators to earn damaging information about people who threatened him. he did that repeatedly too many people. he did that to "the new york times" for example. they do that to the leadership of nbc? people close to the story believe that he did. some people in the company believed that weinstein threatened to reveal damaging information about nbc's then biggest star matt lauer. so we asked nbc about this today. we asked directly. they answered a number of our questions, but notably they ignored the question about matt lauer completely. that's interesting. here's another question, how many people within the hierarchy of nbc knew about all of this?
