>>president breed: supervisor ronen? >>supervisor ronen: yeah, i just wanted to add a couple things. you know, i didn't want to get into the big philosophical conversation yet, but i think by expanding the limits around schools and daycare centers, what we're saying is that there's something inherently dangerous or bad about these shops, and i just -- i just really disagree with that premise. i actually think that the war on drugs has been what has been dangerous for our society. there's documented evidence, plenty of it, showing that where you make drugs legal and regulate them and prevent kids from getting access to them and allow people who are already addicted to substances, you know, to not penalize those individuals, that they use less drugs and get better, and that neighborhoods get safer, and you know, in portugal where all drugs are legal, they've seen the society transformed and crime go down, and i feel like we're somewhat having this conversation in a vacuum and pretending that there's something inherently ba

. >> supervisor ronen: yes, colleagues. i wanted to speed ak for a mom about the difference a homeless shelter made in district nine. i think we opened up a district center working with dpw in about two months, and it has reduced the number of people living in tents in the mission district. when we started and right before we opened up and counted the tents, we were around 200, and we got down at one point to 30 tents, and they're now up hovering around the 60, 70 area. but what also came with the navigation center was, i think, an unprecedented amount of resources. resources from dpw, from the hot team, from the police and from the department of public health behind the scenes, but i think it -- in the future, i'd like to see the department of public health at the table itself. and it really was that -- that joint effort, everyone working together, that made the difference, and so i'm as frustrated as supervisor cohen and kim with the fact that most, if not all of the homeless services in the city, with very few exceptions

. >> public: good afternoon chair ronen and supervisors. my name is josie and i'm is senior community organizer and walk san francisco. as you will recall from the previous meeting on this item, the community had great concerns about the impact of autonomous delivery vehicles on the safety and mobility of pedestrians. we would like to thank supervisor yee for starting this important conversation and forgetting -- forgetting ahead of the problem. we ask you to support this legislation today. at the same time, we ask you to ensure that those limits are robust and truly ensure that pedestrian use of the sidewalk takes precedence above all other consideration. once we let these vehicles on the sidewalks, it will be hard to get them off. getting this right and being cautious is imperative. we will be asking you to very seriously consider the following things in your discussion today. one, how this will pilot program be enforced? if we allow some vehicles on the sidewalks who will enforce the location of the vehicle as being ahered to. and the ma

commissioner ronen. >> supervisor ronen: no questions. i just wanted to thank commissioner sheehy for using his ntip funds. it is important. i don't think it is enough. the way mta envisioned this part of the mission, south van ness was to be the main corridor for cars. mission was going to be the main corridor with red carpet for public transit. and valencia was to be the main corridor for bikes. but because of the proliferation of uber and lift cars, and because of valencia's restaurant and bar culture, it has become one of the most dangerous places for bike riders in the city. i think we absolutely need protected bike lanes to make the vision that mta had about making this a true safe bike corridor real. but it is not going to happen fast enough for me, and i'm very, very worried about the safety of all bike riders in that corridor. i did send a letter last week to the ceo's of uber and lift saying that they are the only ones right now that have the ability to urgently fix the situation by geofencing and preventing their drivers from s

commissioner ronen. >> supervisor ronen: yes. i want to thank everyone who came out. it was very eye-opening. not that we don't know what is going on. but to hear that bikers are using the red lanes for the buses as a safer alternative to what was supposed to be the bike corridor is just insane. and the crazy thing about it is it makes perfect sense. that's how dangerous valencia has become. i have asked the mta several times to increase enforcement of double parking on valencia. i know supervisor sheehy has done the same. i see dillon in the audience. i think we need to have that meeting again because while we will continue to prioritize and fight for protected bike lanes, that's going to take some time. i share the urgency of all the public speakers today. i'm very fearful that someone is going to get severely injured or killed if we just wait to get those protected bike lanes installed. we need to act urgently right now and that means we need to triple, quadruple enforcement and make it known that if you double park on valencia, you are going to get a ticket. and i

supervisor ronen and then supervisor lee. >> councillor ronen: i also wanted to share my deepest condolences to his family and say my work with the mayor was one of most surprising things that happened to me since i became supervisor. we all know how entrenched we become on our political sides of the aisle and when i was running for supervisor i was very negative about the mayor and his leadership. so to his credit, the minute i became supervisor and came to him and said, i want to work with you really closely hand in hand on homelessness in my district, which is such a crisis, he never held my words against me. he never hesitated. he said, yes, let's do this. let's work together. and kept his word every single step of the way. when carolyn, my chief of staff and i, would meet with him each month, we had such good meetings with him and every single time i would walk out of his office saying, how crazy is it that by one of my closest allies in city hall is the mayor of san francisco. and that we agree on how to address this issue. that we have fun working together. we are honest with one anot
