. >> supervisor ronen: yes. thank you, president walton. colleagues, this weekend, there was a huge tragedy in my district that showed a side of the drug overdose epidemic that we don't talk a lot about. we talk a ton about people that are severely addicted to drugs on our streets that are homeless, but we don't talk about recreational drug users. the, you know, young folks in their 20s and 30s who go out to clubs might think they are purchasing a small amount of a recreational drug which in the past while never good for you wasn't deadly to the agree that it is today we don't know for sure but what we suspect that four individuals went out to purchase some cocaine did not know it was lace wednesday fentanyl. came home and took it while one person woke up, the other three never did and they were in their 20s and 30s and had their whole lives in front of them. so i just wanted to shed light for a moment on the other side of this pandemic -- this epidemic. we know that we talk about it in terms of homeless people

supervisor ronen? >> supervisor ronen: thank you. i first suspended the signs on - fines on property owners during the pandemic. it's been a bit of a slap of the face. you're a victim of crime and then you get fined for not fixing it it fast enough when you are really just trying to make ends meet and run your business. it's an imperfect system. i'm really excited that professor melgar has some ideas that she's working to make happen that would fix this issue without penalizing the businesses or the property owners. in the meantime, i have to agree with supervisor peskin, mandelman and now safai, that, the situation with graffiti is out of control on the streets, certainly in my district as well. we -- i'm looking forward to what supervisor melgar has in store. we don't have any other ways of dealing with it. at least at the moment, we're out of the worst of the pandemic where businesses are up and operating again. i really think this is the right move even though i know it probably pains all of us to go back to the way things were.
