chair ronen.ce chair walton and supervisor safaÍ i'm lauren post, chair of the san francisco's public works commission. when the commission was launched two years ago, i was appointed by controller ben rosenfield. i'm pleased to have been reappointed for your consideration by controller greg wagner. as you know, public works is one of the city's largest departments and has been around for 120 years. but it never had a citizens oversight commission until two years ago. so as vice chair xabi mentioned, it's been a learning process for the department and for us. but i'm pleased to tell you, i think the two years have been a big success. as commissioner zarb mentioned, one of my biggest responsibilities last year was leading a national search for a new director for the department. it was a robust search at the mayor's request, and in our own backyard, interim director short rose to the top as the most qualified candidate. we were pleased by the appointment and i think she's breathed new life into the

it's a collective question, supervisor ronen. we did engage with the department of public works to provide us. so i'll take a step back for, for context, setting. so right now, the way juvenile hall sleeping rooms are built, the base of each bed is concrete. and this is the topic of a lot of shared concern and desire for something different for our young people, the combination of concrete bed frames, plus the kinds of mattresses that the state require, means that it's not comfortable for kids or anyone who tries sitting on them. so we did engage with public works starting late last calendar year for an estimate, and they've been able to give us some preliminary estimates of the cost. it's roughly 27,000 to take two beds out of one room. so we have them working with us now on some more details on how that would work, what could be possible and whether it would be dpw or an outside entity that would even do the work, is very time consuming and costly because of the dust mitigation required when you're blowing out that much concret
