here now is ronna mcdaniel, chair of the republican national committee. a, actually i want to turn you to a poll a lot of people have been talking about today showing in pennsylvania former vice president joe biden 50% versus president trump 42%. democrats love to point to all the polls where joe biden is winning. how do you respond to that? >> you know i always look at metrics in the poll and sampling. i've seen flaws a lot of polls recently come out but i will tell you internally we're monitoring states as well. we see the president in very strong state especially voters are asked who is best to build the economy back up after this virus? the president has done it once. he will be the right leader to do this again and i think that is the message we'll be taking to voters come november, that really resonates because people are afraid of their businesses being shut, their jobs being lost. they know that they're going to need a leader who recognizes these issues. especially as you just saw, democrats held up this critical funding for small businesses to be

had huddled with some of his top political advisers, including parscale and the rnc chairwoman ronna mcdaniel. and during that phone call, don, i'm told that the president was faced with the serious, grim reality of his re-election chances, that is according to internal rnc and trump campaign polling data that the president is headed for defeat in some of the key battleground states. and one of the reasons that these aides were emphasizing was the president's daily combative news conferences. the president was specifically shown data that shows some of these swing voters in some of those key states were really turned off by the president's performance in some of those briefings. and this is part of one of those latest efforts, don, by those aides to get the president to scale back those daily news conferences. of course, just the next day what we saw from the president was perhaps his most self-defeating news conference yet when he came out and talked about americans potentially ingesting disinfectant in order to cure themselves of the coronavirus. and so then it was in that context, don, the

meetings, conference calls with his top advisers, that includes brad parscale, his campaign manager, ronna mcdaniel the head of the rnc, as well as jared kushner who was there in the white house, and those meetings, the aides tried to get in part two things to him. first, that he should curtail the coronavirus briefings, which they thought were very damaging to him and his standing in the polls, particularly with senior citizens. the president initially pushed back at that, pointing to their ratings. but after the comment about injecting disinfectants he has at least for now suspended those. but then as you've said, yes, they also showed him an array of battleground state poll numbers that show him losing and in some states like michigan losing rather significantly. and if the election was held today, brian, trump's own campaign says he would lose to joe biden. >> and interestingly, his use of words. this reuters piece tonight, "i don't believe the polls," trump said. it's early in the game to reach into the toolbox for that one, by the way, jonathan.
