joining us from moscow to tell us more about that approval, rory, and what happens next?eporter: well, what happens next is a very big question. to be hospital nobody really knows that yet except what has happened has gone through through extraordinary fast. consider that earlier this morning the lower house of parliament requested that putin step in and do something about what is happening in crimea. it was only about two hours ago that the announcement came out from the kremlin that putin was requesting from the upper house of parliament that it permit some sort of military involvement in ukraine. then we have an extraordinary session of the upper house of parliament that lasted barely an hour. it was a succession of speakers getting up, going to the podium, and agreeing unanimously with the president's position. some very forcefully. some more diplomatically. but there was absolutely no dissent from the line that some sort of russian military activity was permitted and recommended for ukraine. we heard from, say, the head of the defense committee who looked at it and a

we are joined by al jazeera correspondent rory challands were moscow. good to have you with us. how are people in moscow reacting. how strong is public support for the military action in ukraine. >> finding trustworthy independent polls is difficult. they are not done och, so it's a fairly difficult task to gauge accurately who public opinion generally is. anebbing totally, speaking to people, engaging views myself, it does seem to be that russians in the main sympathise with their government actions in ukraine. the main reason for that is russians sympathise with fellow russian speakers particularly in crimea. they see them as kip, than they are ethnic brothers and sisters. that essentially they are being persecuted. the message that you get flicking through the tv channels, and if you read the newspapers, is that russian speakers, ethnic russians in ukraine are on the receiving end of a nasty campaign of factorism that has been stoked and provoked by the west, funded by the west, and acted through the new government in kiev, the new government in kiev is passing all sorts of l

let's go to rory challenge in moscow. what are you hearing on the ground there? >> well, it's early morning here in moscow so the diplomatic activity, the political activity is yet to get underway and we'll have to see what the day brings before we can call that one. there is unlikely to have been a shift in the russian position overnight, and the russian position has been, is i think, still, that what it is doing in crimea, what it is doing in ukraine, is merely protecting russian-speakers, merely protecting the crimean black sea fleet that is centered in crimea. that is a perfectly legitimate thing to do because the government that is now in power in kiev is illegitimate, according to the russians, according to moscow, sphawld essentially in a western-funded western fueled coup. they are fascists, bandits, and they are putting lives of russian compatriots they east of the crimea at risk and therefore, what russia is doing is the only right thing to do given the circumstances. do russians themselves on the streets believe that? well, it's difficult to know for s
