revisited of rosa delauro is our guest. she sits on the prorations committee.hank you for being here this morning. the houses taking up the farm bill this week,, we have seen the headlines and politico. there is a new five-year farm bill. lay out the basics and what the concerns are. guest: well first of all, let me tell you my principal concern and ihe farm bill, worked on the bill in 2008. deals a district which is with specialty crops. my concern with this farm bill is that it is particularly around the food stamp cuts .hich are almost $21 billion to set the stage for a moment, we are just -- we are in the midst of a great recession. and during the great recession the food stamp program which is a significant program -- a nutrition program -- has literally kept people out of poverty, helped people not to fall into poverty, and it is also worked to feed hungry children. we have 1 out of 7 people that are on food stamps. 47 million people. most half of them are children, they are seniors, they are disabled. so it is a very serious issue. people are struggling

congresswoman rosa delauro, who i'll yield to in a few minutes, working with then-speaker nancy pelosi and i was happy to play a little bit of a role in it, helped fight to up the nutrition program in this -- in the farm bill in 2008. as a result of that, we were table pass the farm bill. and as a result of that, we were able to help millions and millions and millions of families. that's a good thing. but for whatever reason new ork 2013, programs to help poor people have become controversial. my republican friends have diminished and demeaned this program called snap. they have diminished the struggle of poor people. i said in the rules committee today that the -- i reminded my colleagues in the rules committee today that the average food stamp benefit, the average snap benefit, is $1.50 a meal. $1.50 a meal. $4.50 a day. that's like a starbucks, one of those fancy starbucks coffees. that's what this is. not some overly generous benefit, it's not even an adequate benefit, quite frankly, but in some cases it is a lifeline for families. that's what it is. you know, there are a number of

yourself, barbara lee, and rosa delauro, a person of great justice and passion and represents truth and righteousness and tries to do the right thing and fights for those who need a voice to fight for them. and i appreciate you, rosa, for being here and everything that you do, barbara lee. you know, i've said it before, just a tremendous patriot. a wonderful person, a heart of gold. but a fist of steel when it comes to what she believes in. and i deeply respect and honor both of those women. nd today i had the opportunity at the judiciary committee meeting where we were engaged in the war on women, another abortion bill. and i happen to notice that on the other side of the aisle, mr. speaker, there were no women on the panel. in fact, i discovered to my horror that there are no women on the judiciary committee period. and here we are in the year 2013 . so on this side of the aisle we've got some great women like from lauro, barbara lee california, and so many others. nancy pelosi, debby wasserman schultz. i can just name them forever. and i just appreciate being able to serve with them.
