creating even more obstacles in a search that's already daunting. >> rosa flores joins me now. , great piece because i think, you know, hard for any of us to get a sense.of just how weak the signals can be in the ocean. you were dealing in much shallower waters it's a real lesson about the challenge here, isn't it? >> it really is. and one of the things i find fascinating i was asking the researchers how does the sound travel because we've been hearing that the ping has a two-mile radius and here's the easiest way to explain it. here's how they put it, low-pitched sounds travel very far in the ocean. high-pitched sounds don't travel as far. and this pinger, jim, is a high-pitched sound and so they say that's why it has this two-mile radius and then, of course, i had to follow up with this question. i said because one of the complicating things about the search is just how deep the indian ocean is. in parts of the indian ocean it's deeper than two miles. and the oceanographer said, you know, rosa, on the surface of the water you'd literally have to be on top of it to hear it. tha

and now, rosa flores, we are anxiously awaiting information, and tell us what happens if these pingsl happen first? >> well, brianna, i am fascinated by this technology, because it is used on a regular bae sis in the oil and gas industry. how do i know this? well, i used to work in tv land in louisiana and that is oil and gas operations in the gulf of mexico, and so what are we talking about here auvs and rovs. and auvs are underwater autonomous vehicles. they go underneath and probe the ocean floor. what would they be looking for? probes on the ocean floor that are oddities. that would help to the find the debris field. then once you find it you step it up with a rov, a remotely operated vehicle. this technology is pretty amazing. and you are looking at/on the screen. and what it is, it is these machines that are equipped with high definition cameras, arms and jaws. so these high definition cameras are your eyes in the deep sea. this equipment would actually be able to the look for the black box. once you see the black box, and then what dow do you do? you use the arms and the hands

rosa flores, cnn, new york. >> all right. david kelly is the president and ceo of bluefin robotics.u with us, sir. appreciate it. as you know, right now they're still searching with the towed pinger locators. but those only hear a black box. your bluefin can see a box, see the wreckage. when it is time to put the bluefin in the water to answer the question of whether this is the plane? >> the bluefin can search about 40 square miles a day. and so the appropriate time would be when they had narrowed the search area enough that that coverage would give them data that they need to resolve the mystery. >> so it sounds like you're saying a few days away, if they were to continue to acquire the signal and triangulate more, you would still wait a few days? >> the people on the site, we salute their efforts in trying to resolve this mystery. phoenix international that owns the bluefin 21 has done multiple of these types of missions. they know what they're doing, and i trust their judgment on when to put the vehicle into the water to conduct the search. >> and what about whether how deep it

rosa flores, cnn, cape cod, massachusetts. >> and joining me now, richard quest along with vince capone, an underwater search and rescue expert who helped find the engines from the apollo spacecraft. they were found four decades after the shuttle launched 14,000 feet below the surface in the atlantic ocean. you just saw rosa's report there. is there a better way to search for this plane? >> not really. these guys are doing a great job. they are probably one of the most experienced search teams for deep water search ops, especially for aircraft. >> and so the bluefin, there is other options, and we're going to be looking at a human submersible in a few moments. but that would be very difficult because of the human eye and what it can see? >> you can only see 20, 30 feet with lights. our sonar can see hundreds of meters. we're creating images with sound. >> what about those auvs that are tethered to the ship up above? there is a different auv that is tethered to the ship that would send the data back in real-time? >> those are called rovs, remotely operated vehicles. but those move very s

rosa flores, cnn, new york. >> so that's an idea of how it's going out there.chad myers, bring you in. you have done math looking into the search area. but what i really wanted was a comparison. talk about 150 miles, how does that compare to the great lakes? >> we figured that out, changed kill meters to miles and all that, we came up with 84,000 square miles. how does that relate? you would have to search in just the current search area, the one they want to be 100 times smaller, superior, michigan, huron, and most of lake erie, but not lake ontario. all of that. i'm going to give a lot of benefit of the doubt to the technology in saying we have heard about this one to two to three mile range on the ping, ping, ping. i'm going three miles, that's the highest. if this listener can listen three miles in both directions, a six-mile wide strip. it's a six-mile wide lawn mower. you go back and forth and try to cover 84,000 square miles, six miles wide at a time at 5 miles per hour. can't go too fast. it's over 100 days for that one thing to search this one area. th

rosa flores has become a bit of an oceanographer herself.hat is going on causing the competing noises? >> i talked to several ocean engineers and we can't say it's a loud place, but it's definitely a noisy place. there are several levels of noises. for example, sea life. in this particular case, in the indian ocean, there a species of dolphins that sound very much like the pinger. so remember the pings that were heard from the chinese, several engineers told me the same thing, that's what they thought that probably is because will is a species of dolphins in this particular place that sound like that. and then think about this. just ships and ship noise. at any point in time, and there's about 15,000 ships in the world's oceans, and sound travels through water differently. so it creates not only this noise, but they describe it as a rumble. so there is a rumble in the ocean just because of ship noise. and then the most intense noise is rain. and sounds more like static underwater. remember the black and white tvs? when you saw snow, that's w
