rosa flores is in on the story. who are the victims and how did they die?imagine this, there's a father who has to identify his three children, except his children have been tied from their hands, their feet, they have a shot to the head, and authorities say that their bodies are so decomposed that they're having to use tattoos, clothing, and also shoes to identify the bodies. so this is what this father had to do. and here's what we know from authorities. four bodies were found in el control, which is just south of the texas border. one of them was a mexican national. the other three, these three siblings that we've been talking about, ages 26 to 21, a woman and her two brothers. here's what's so odd about this. they're from a tiny town in south texas of a few thousand people. that's the town that i grew up in in south texas. it's called progresso. i didn't go to high school at the same time that they did, but they went to my high school. so i talked to one of their friends late last night, and they told me that the wake is today. i tried calling her today

rosa flores joins us now. what's next for these families? >> reporter: you know, it's a tough call for these families. they, of course, have said that the only thing that they want right now is their children back. but here is how outrageous and crazy this situation has become, anderson. during that protest, two protesters were allegedly arrested. then the protesters allegedly kidnapped a police officer and with a human rights group present, they swapped. that gives you a taste of the violence and how the situation continues to escalate. >> the mayor and his wife, the ones who allegedly orchestrated this entire thing, they're still in custody, right? >> they are. they're still in custody. authorities are questioning them. no word on when charges may be dropped -- or charges may be made. and they haven't made a comment. so it's one of the mysteries, because we don't know exactly what they did or exactly why they were detained four days after these students went missing, these people went on the run. and then it took police a while to find the

the students disappeared in southern mexico on september 26th, and cnn's rosa flores joins us now more>> reporter: randi, good morning. the parents of these missing students have made one thing very clear, that they will get more and more radical. let me tell you something, they are keeping at their word. we have seen burned cars, charred buildings and yesterday for a few hours, the crippling of the acapulco airport. more than 1,000 outraged protesters take to the streets of acapulco facing law enforcement at the international airport. a show of defiance in response to the disappearance of 43 students in southern mexico, all 43 lives were abruptly interrupted by what authorities call an organized criminal ring involving the mayor, his wife, the police chief, and drug traffickers. the students were on this highway headed towards iguala, they belonged to an all male teachers college that's known for protesting against the government. city mayor didn't want them in town and ordered the police chief to stop the students according to authorities. this is where the plot thickens. the last pl

rosa flores has more. >> reporter: they're dubbed the imperial couple, for their exercise of power andel territory. the mayor, a business man who took office in 2012, his wife, wasn't the mayor, but authorities say she held the seat of elicit power at city hall. juan has been covering the cartels in this part of mexico for more than 20 years. how is the mayor and his wife connected to the cartels? she was very connected because her brothers were at the very top of the cartel. with a lot of power. the power couple's throne came tumbling down when they became suspects in the disappearance of 43 students from a teacher's college who arrived on september 26th. informants very nonchalantly observe their surroundings, and tip off their bosses about what's going on. the mayor reportedly had cartel members on his payroll who after being arrested told authorities that the mayor paid them tens of thousands of dollars to be at his disposal. on september 26th, police officers reported to local authorities the students' arrival in four buses according to officials. their arrival raised eyebrows. th

our own rosa flores just back from the protests. at you saw, rosa. >> reporter: i can tell you the tensions completely erupted between protesters and police and, like you mentioned, all of this goes back to those 23 missing students. they went missing on september 26 and from talking to the spokesperson, brianna, he told me that they -- their protests will get more and more radical and that's exactly what we saw. take a look at your screen because you'll be able to see some of this video. now, you'll probably see a bridge and you see the protesters over that bridge. let me paint you a picture. moments before this video was shot there were -- the protesters on one side, the police on the other. one approached the other until the protesters overcame the police. now, these tensions have expl e exploded since we've been here. we've seen burned buildings, burned cars, even 234 mexico city the burning of the door of the national palace and to tell you the truth, it only seems like it's intensifying. it doesn't appear to be deescalating. ri

rosa flores joins us in guerrero state. with her is our senior latin affairs editor rafael romo.th you first, rosa, give us an update. are mexican authorities making any progress at all? >> you know, at this point what they're doing is they've collected these heavily-charred decomposed remains and they've sent them to labs. they're trying to i.d. these remains. but they do say that they're heavily charred, they're heavily decompose sod they don't know if they're going to be able to i.d. any of these bodies. >> what about any u.s. involvement? are we getting involved? >> you know, not at this point that we heard. the only thing that we do know is that there are other, i guess, people from other countries that are involved. you've got argentinian forensic experts that are looking at the remains and then they've sent those remains to austria because they were trying to figure out the location where they'd have these -- i guess the best forensic experts given the decomposition of the remains. >> the austrian team is going to take a close look at those dna samples and they're going to

and rosa flores is on the massachusetts turnpike.nnifer, starting with you, what's the latest on flights right now? >> reporter: well, looks like flights are starting to be canceled left and right. we had a little bit of a slowdown this morning. the problem was the inbound flights couldn't get here because of a low ceiling. so clouds were very low. so it's starting to have that domino effect. look on the wall behind me. you can see a little bit more red on the wall. so flights are being canceled. we're also seeing a lot more delays. in fact, flight aware is reporting over 500 flights delayed within the past three hours and about 22 cancellations. do expect that number to increase. of course, laguardia and newark both expecting about 10% of their flights to be canceled for today. and those snowplows are ready. we are seeing a wintry mix in new york right now. we had snow earlier. the snow/rain line very close to the city. we expect for snow as the afternoon goes on. but the airport says they have folks working 12-hour shifts with the

rosa flores joins me now. what are you learning tonight? what is the latest? >> well, anderson, there are so many twists and turns to this story. hear this, federal authorities here say that the mayor of a town, his wife, the police chief, and the cartels are allegedly all involved. now, about the latest twist, here is what we learned from authorities, they say they have arrested three cartel members who allegedly confessed to killing the students, burning their bodies, putting their remains in body bags and tossing them into the river. take a look at your screen. we have video of this river, shot last week by cnn photojournalist chris turner. you'll see that federal authorities are combing through that river. we can't verify that this is actually the federal authorities finding these body bags. but let me tell you something, the amount of military that was in this particular town is definitely out of the ordinary. >> let's get this straight, the mayor is allegedly behind these killings. showed a picture of the mayor and his wife, earlier video of them. why wo

our rosa flores has been following the story and joins us. there was a news conference that just happened. what with we learned within the last hour? >> within the last few minutes, suzanne, this press conference wrapped up. here's what we know from police. at 2:30 a.m. today, police received a phone call about a woman and her son, that they had found the body of a man inside a dumpster. officers responded to the scene and they say that through tattoos, through identifying the tattoos on this man, they have decided that it is, indeed, kosta karageorge. i want you to take a listen to what police officers had to say. >> we are able to confirm through tattoos here at the scene that it is the body of kosta karageorge. >> are you confident of that? >> at this time, preliminary investigation is showing that he died from what appears to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound. we have recovered a firearm at the scene. the parents have been notified. >> now, such a tough time, suzanne, for this family. we know that the community had been looking for him. t

cnn's rosa flores has more for us from mexico. good morning, rosa.otests growing there this morning? >> you know, they are. tensions are really high, all-sip. alisyn. it looks and sounds like a war zone. but it's the clash between student protesters and federal police in the guerrero state capital in which a government building was torched, all in response to the disappearance of 43 college students more than five weeks ago. the situation is very tense right now between the protesters and federal police. now take a look on one side of this bridge are federal police officers. they've been firing rubber bullets. on the other side, you've got the protesters. they've been firing back with fireworks, rocks, you name it, sticks, and it's not stopping. this boiled over tension fueled by inconclusive news of the whereabouts of the missing. angry protesters not standing down, continuing their advance across this bridge. more than 70 arrests have been made, including the mayor and his wife. parents have been told their children are dead and that three other su

rosa flores is live in mexico with the latest. what do you see in change of dynamic there?ou know chris, the mayor of a town has been charged with six counts of aggravated homicide. protestors are not letting up. there's an interesting dynamic in town. a lot of people in this area say hey, we support the effort to find these 43 missing students. what they don't support is burning of buildings, burning of cars, blocking of streets. a lot of them are saying enough is enough. the chaos starts as people roll into town. mass protestors blocking the highway and syphoning gas, enough to scare drivers and people who call mexico home. especially business owner who is depend on open roads to get merchandise and make a living. like this woman who doesn't want to be identified for fear of retaliation, but who says at least four distributors have stopped deliveries to her store and she feels a sense of hopelessness because there's not much that citizens, business owners can do. protestors have also a commandeered vehicles by day and night and turned them into fiery messages. there's thi
