for that let's bring in cnbc's rosanna lockwood, who is always joins us from london.th us. the dow jones industrial average notched a fifth consecutive day higher after strong results from retailers seem to lift sentiment across the market. it's been a rough couple of weeks, do you think wall street is ready to end this one in the green? >> it's hoping john. interesting when you think about the week that we had prior. you had this real warning to target regarding earnings. seeing that the retailers are really struggling stateside with these higher cost of doing business. high gas prices, logistics prices, supply chain disruptions, but good news overnight, this was actually from dollar tree and dollar general, some very strong reports there. macy's and nordstrom as well. strength in the retail sector in the states, which is really propping up the markets as you said. firmly in the green for this friday session so far, in europe the u.s., futures tipping towards positive at the moment. let's hope they can hold, up because it would be the first positive and for the u.s.

for that, let's bring in cnbc's rosanna lockwood who joins us live from london. the s&p 500 fell to its lowest level in more than a year. what's your sense of it? how long should we expect this economic woe to play out on wall street and main street? >> it's a good question because i think the economic woes will certainly last a long time, and there is underlying fundamental factors in ukraine, and china, and interest rates, inflation, they are not going away, but the markets react differently day by day. now yesterday, the sell-off on wall street, it was outside the market, talking about it on the subway home. and the nasdaq down 4%. the nasdaq off 25% year to date. and so is the s&p 500 down, fell below the technical level yesterday. in terms of where the market, where wall street goes, the u.s. futures are pointing this way, and europe, the trading day, you got to remember it is based off earnings with companies reporting, particularly sensitive at the moment. but broadly, economic woes, expect them to continue for the long term. the markets, we'll have to see

rosanna lockwood is in brussels where they are hammering out the agreement. nna, what exactly will this and won't this involve >> reporter: what won't involve is absolutely key in that, dom this is the sixth and toughest round of sanctions by the eu against russia since that invasion of ukraine by russia on february 24th. we have seen a lot of unity up to the point of banning a complete ban on oil into europe. this was what they were calling for on may 4th it has been more than 26 days to get to the agreement overnight the reason being is landlocked countries like hungary and czech republic and slovakia are relying on the friendship pipeline they say if you cut off oil, we have nothing they have been standing in the way of the agreement we have a carve out in the agreement. 2/3 comes by ship. all of that is banned. 1/3 of it is coming by pipeline. hungary secured an exemption for the pipeline and on top of that, they secured the exemption if something happens to the pipeline, they can get oil from the ships. it is a major achievement by hungary. western leader
