rosekind. i think you and the other distinguished members of our panel for appearing before us today on this important topic and certainly a thank you for your public service. automobile accidents account of for over 35,000 fatalities in 2015, as you have indicated. 562 of those souls lost were from the state of new jersey. by removing driver error, which accounts for vast majorities of these deaths, autonomous vehicles have the potential to be the single greatest achievement in auto safety in a lifetime saving tens of , thousands of lives each year. the subcommittee with jurisdiction over this topic and over the automotive industry , it is our job to make sure innovation is allowed occur. it is not hindered by unnecessary regulation while consumer safety which , is paramount. dr. rosekind, the guidance states it is not intended for states to codify as legal requirements for the development design and manufacture testing operation of automated vehicles. that's on page 11 of the guidance. do you

[applause] >> i thought mary basra really set the tone for this discussion by saying this one of a series of challenges that we face. maybe you can elaborate a bit more on that. we look at 50 billion devices a 2020 as she said, seven per household, the connectivity of the vehicle, market, what do you feel is the biggest obstacle that needs to be addressed going forward? >> the first thing is just the volume, right? i think that's the biggest challenge we have the it was about this time last year at another meeting where we are talking cybersecurity in the morning and a wired article came out in the afternoon. i thought they gave us a couple of lessons. one was within days we had a recall. for a boy who is asking for regulations we have tools to go after it so distorted that it is already concerned about which is if you put a regulation place, how do we go after this speed, the flexible approach we need it the second i remember making a comment about the target is in every scrunch. one

we've seen what rosekind has done. i think there is an opportunity to blend this stuff and put america in the lead on something. but china is heading here as well. this is the holy grail. a lot of people are heading there. host: is audi working with other car companies on this technology or is this audi centric? mr. keogh: oh, this is awed cien trick. i think where we would work with the companies is on the regulations and infrastructure. that is a common area where we mutually agree it needs to be there. most of the technology we're developing on our own. the only one we do have a partnership for the most part is a mapping company called here and it is jointly owned by b.m.w., audi, and mercedes bens. if you look at the digitized future as you can imagine extremely accurate maps are going to become the holy grail. this is something that for one company to invest in probably would have been a little too expensive to scale it up and make it work and then only scale it to one brand so it is where the three brands got tog
