rosemary? >> and becky, you have lived, and you've been working in the region for some time now. and as you know, it's one thick to be talk being about these five arab nations on board with the strikes on isis if syria. it is a whole different matter when you then consider whether the citizens of those five nations are on board with this. how do you expect them to respond, as you say, as they wake to the news of this? such active roles, too, that their nations are taking. >> that's a very, very interesting question. you feel a real sense of urgency in this region. look, three, four, five years ago, if you talked to people locally here, politics was spoken about, but there was always a sense here in the gulf that you were some distance away from what was going on, certainly with the arab spring. when you speak to youngsters here, you say how did the arab spring affect you and they're quite clear that they're fenced from what was going on in the wider region. but it's clear now that countries her

rosemary? >> reporter: tracy, the first day of class is stressful nor any kid, but it may be especially difficult for students here at philadelphia's public schools. that's because the philadelphia school district is dealing with an $81 million deficit. major cuts have already been made to support staff and services, and the threat of even more layoffs, massive layoffs, is looming. the school district is counting on cigarette tax revenues to help fill that $81 million gap. you may remember that the pennsylvania legislature couldn't agree on one bill earlier in the summer, and that's the reason why it didn't pass. but there have been assurances from harrisburg that it will go through this time around. still, the cigarette tax wouldn't generate all of the $81 million needed, and so, the district will be looking for concessions from the teachers union. they've been negotiating a new contract with the district for about a year and a half now. if they ultimately can't come to an agreement, the schoo

rosemary? >> reporter: that's right, tracy. for students who aren't walking to school or catching a ride, the district provides them with septa passes that they can take the bus, train or trolley, so long as they meet the requirements of how far away their home is from school. however, last month, the district announced plans to reduce service so that only students who live two miles away or more would be able to get their hands on those septa passes. before, you just had to live a mile and a half away. this is part of an effort to cut $32 million right before the start of school to make sure that classes would start on time. there is some good news this morning. we've been talking to district officials who tell us they have been able to work out an agreement with septa. there was concern that students would be coming late to class or not showing up at all. >> transportation cuts are not moving forward. transportation for our secondary school is going to stay the same, so high school students a

rosemary, putting in a bit of perspective.eresting that he thinks it's unlikely, that the supreme leader in beijing is not being briefed on what's going on here in hong kong. just quickly, to recap, tomorrow, things get interesting because it is a public holiday here. there is widespread expectations, a lot more people are going to turn out. there's tens of thousands of people here now. you look around, still a lot of them are students. a lot of younger hong kongers here. tomorrow, with the public holiday, it could be a big, big swelling of those numbers, which is going to put a lot of strain on the police here to deal with it and to keep it orderly. tomorrow could mark a significant development. significant stage in the evolution of this dispute here in hong kong, rosemary? >> it certainly could. the only things that have stopped people out on the streets at the moment, is it's very hot. but people have been going to work. after they're finished work, they've been coming back on the streets. they won't have work to go to tomo

>> good morning, rosemary. it took about seven seconds for this apartment building just over my shoulder to be reduced to rubble. a billowing cloud of dust spread over this part of germantown as 16-story queen lane tower came down. philadelphia housing authority tells us the fire department are on the scene now hosing down the debris. our camera was rolling as people donned masks and raised their cellphones to capture the moment. >> i guess it had to happen. it had to happen. the building was deteriorating. it had to happen. sad occasion. >> i've never heard a bomb go off and i've never seen a building implode. so it was pretty fun. >> reporter: now, evacuated families who live within one block of the queen building will be allowed back into their homes today to check things out between 10:00 and 11:00 this morning. they tell us that everyone should be back inside about 5:00. in the next half hour, we're going to hear from residents who lived in those towers. latest live now in germantown, monique braxton, nbc

rosemary? >> thank you, brittney. >>> right now investigators are surrounding a home in the poconos mountains where 31-year-old eric frein lived with his parents. frein is accuse of ambushing two pennsylvania state troopers and killing one of them. police say he's been on the run since this time last week. nbc 10's matt is live in the digital operations center. we understand overnight there were gunshots heard in that area. any update? >> right now, rosemary, eric frein is reportedly hiding out in a home or cabin near his if parents owe home canadensis, monroe county. many homes have been evacuated. other residents in price and barracks townships were told to shelter in their residences, lock their doors and stay away from windows. this as about 200 officers at a time are going out to find eric frein. he is accused of ambushing two troopers one week ago yesterday. one of the troopers, corporal brian dickson, was killed. another alex douglas, was critically injured. because frein is considered a

that's where nbc 10's rosemary connors joins us live now with an update. rosemary? >> reporter: well, tracy, we now know the identities of the two women who were killed in this crash. the first woman has been identified as 30-year-old idil bahsi of istanbul, turkey. she died overnight at the hospital. the other victim is identified as 54-year-old hua'y chen of new york city. their tour bus never made it back to new york. as you can see from our video from skyforce10 over the scene yesterday, the tour bus rolled on to its side. that's where it ended up. the first victim who died was pressed underneath of the bus and ejected from her seat. according to state police, the driver, who's been identified as 56-year-old jinli zhao of flushing, new york, was trying to navigate a turn on the off-ramp from state route 1 south to 13 north. that's when the bus initially rolled over on to its roof and then slid down an embankment. the tour bus is owned by am usa express. the tours are sponsored by eworld travel and tours, all based out of new york. the group had been sight seeing

rosemary, back to you. >> becky anderson, thank you very much.m joined by cnn military analyst rick francona, a retired u.s. air force lieutenant colonel. thanks for talking with us again. as the hours progress, we eastern getting a little more information. we're able to piece a little bit more together. what are you making of this? now we're hearing the possibility of 20 targets being hit. we know from jordan confirmation that their aircraft have returned back. what is your reading of all of this? what is your reading of the strategy, what is your reading of the roles of these five arab nations, mostly sunni, which is very significant in this, what do you think going forward? >> well, if they hit 20 targets and you had five nations involved, that means that they put a lot of ordinance into 20 separate targets. that would mean that they thought there was a lot of high value assets in these targets. we know that they were going to go after command and control communications facilities in the areas that we knew they were storing military equipment.

nbc 10's rosemary connors is live outside christiana hospital, where many of the passengers are being treated this morning. tell us what's next in the investigation. >> reporter: well, vai, right now, state police, delaware police are primarily investigating, but they will be working with the ntsb. we want to show you video from skyforce10 over the scene of the crash, just to give you a full as you can see, the tour bus literally rolled on to its side. according to delaware state police, two women died and we do have their identities. 54-year-old hua'y chen of new york city was trapped underneath of that bus and died at the scene. and 30-year-old idil bahsi of here at christiana hospital. according to state police, the driver, 56-year-old jinli zhao of flushing, new york, was trying to navigate a turn on the off-ramp from state route 1 south to 13 north. over. in total, including the driver, 50 people were on board. 49 people who initially survived suffered some kind of injury, so everybody was taken to the hospital. again, we know that another passenger, the woman from turkey, she di

rosemary, we now know the names of the victims who died. tell us more. >> reporter: we do, tracy. they're identified as 54-year-old hua'y chen of new york city. she died at the scene of the crash. she was trapped underneath that tour bus. the other victim who died has been identified as 30-year-old idil bahsi of istanbul, turkey. overnight. now, as you can see in this video from the ground and in the air, this tour bus rolled over on to its side. it was carrying 50 people, according to delaware state police, the driver, who has been identified as 56-year-old jinli zhao of flushing new york, was trying to navigate the curve on the off-ramp from state route 1 south to us 15 north. express out of new york city. police tell us the passengers were part of a sight seeing tour sponsored by e-world travel and tours also based out of new york. they had been on the tour since friday, coming from washington back to new york at the time of the crash. 26 passengers out of the 50 on board were brought here to christiana hospital. >> injuries vary widely. these patients, some have head injuries,

nbc 10's rosemary connors is live outside benjamin franklin high school in spring garden. rosemary, it's time for the students. >> reporter: yeah, absolutely, chris. yeah, it is time. school is opening on time for the 130,000 students here in the district, but both kids and teachers are going to be forced to make due with less. the philadelphia school district is facing an $81 million deficit after major budget cuts already. that includes a $32 million slash in services just last month so that classes could begin as scheduled. that means that today children will see less support staff in their schools, like counselors, nurses and police officers. also, students may have to bring their own cleaning supplies because janitors will be coming to campus less frequently. massive layoffs could be coming down the pike a little later this fall if the pennsylvania legislature does not approve the $2-per-pack cigarette tax that the district has already factored into its budget. they're counting on that money. legislators, by the way, are back in session one week from today, so all eye
