rosemary: good morning, i'm rosemary connors for "nbc10@issue." politicians and many others can barely open their mouths these days without saying the mc word, middle class. but defining the middle class is much easier said than done. according to an american community survey from 2013, to be considered middle class in pennsylvania, you need a median household income of about $52,000 a year. in new jersey, it's $70,000. and in delaware, about $58,000. but there's more to those numbers. where the middle class lives, what they do, how they think may have as much of an impact when it comes to defining the middle class as their salary. joining me now are two experts who know more about the middle class in our area than just about anybody. larry eichel is the director of the philadelphia research initiative for the pew charitable trusts. the initiative released an extensive report on the city's middle class several years ago. also joining the conversation, ira goldstein, the president of policy solutions for reinvestment fund. reinvestment fund has don

rosemary: mr. krasner, how would you curb the homicide rate in philadelphia? larry: well, as you know, there's a long-term and a short-term approach. the short-term approach has to include things that other das have not been willing to do for political reasons. we have to go after dirty gun shops. i've been going after dirty gun shops in one way or another for a very long time, but that's not something this office have ever done. they always want to talk about going after individuals, but not gun shops that engage in straw purchases, or that permit them to occur. there's a 48 hour reporting rule, which is out there right now, which seth williams did not enforce that says if you're going to claim that your gun disappeared due to loss or theft, you have to report it within 48 hours. it's very important because when we find someone who's been shot to death, and we trace a crime gun to that killing, what we find out over and over is that a, quote, legitimate purchaser, unquote, is claiming that it disa

rosemary? >> indeed. and delia, there are so many restrictions for pope visiting myanmar. but he is a man, and we know that he pushes boundaries. how far might he push those boundaries on this papal visit? >> rosemary, i wouldn't expect it. i think that he is a very savvy diplomat, the you want. he has been in a lot of situations where you have opposition, and you've got two people sitting down at the table, trying to work things out. he see not coming and representing anybody's special interests. he is comes as a neutral third party. and i expect for his language and his whole attitude to be one of openness to both sides. certainly to the host country as well. but not step back from his responsibility clearly to speak out on behalf of those who are persecuted. not just in the rohingya situation there is a christian persecution as well here. there are a number of religious and ethnic conflicts going on. as well, rosemary, these are two of the poorest countries in asia. they're two of the countr

rosemary? >> and as you mentioned, pope francis will meet myanmar's de facto leader aung san suu kyi who was once revered for protesting against the country's military dictatorship. now she is criticized for not derest announcing the violence towards the rohingya refugees. explain to us why there is so much hatred directed towards the rohingya population? why are they treated so brutally by the government? >> for outsiders, myself included, because it's hard to understand. myanmar is multi-ethnic and state there are over 135 ethnic groups. the are not one of those groups. the government refuses to use the word rohingya, often referring to them as bengali. but what is clear there is that there is in recent years a surge in buddhist nationalism there and i would argue a surge in islamophobia as well. funeral for a fallen man. this was the scene in january after the brazen daylight shooting of a well-known flower myanmar. the victim was an outspoken member of myanmar's tiny muslim religious minori

i'm rosemary connors. it's just after 5:30. let's get to the weather because i'm sure you're heading out today have plans. meteorologist krystal klei is tracking all those changes for us in the most accurate neighborhood forecast. krystal. >> rosemary, i'm a silver lining kind of person and i almost think it's a good thing we're cooling down a bit. the other day i wore a sweater outside in the afternoon, had to push sleeves all the way up it was so warm in the afternoon. we will not be that warm today. temperatures right now chilly start to the morning. we're at 48 in philadelphia, 42 mt. holly. coatesville at 43. those are the actual temperatures. you see we're even in the 30s right now over mt. pocono. but the feels like conditions are a little bit cooler, 43 for philly, 43 atlantic city. and mt. pocono does feel like it's below freezing. so it's cooler than -- or rather feels cooler than it actually is, that's thanks to a light breeze out there this morning that helps temperatures feel lower than they truly are to our skin.

i'm rosemary connors. it's 7:00 on this sunday. meteorologist krystal klei is tracking this winterlike weather. it really is feeling like winter, krystal. not fall. >> very much feeling like winter. i knew yesterday, okay, it is time when i had to break out the gloves, the scarf, the big puffy jacket. today is still fairly cold but not as cold as yesterday at this time. take a. this is the 24-hour change map comparing temperatures right now to 24 hours ago. and we are nine degrees warmer in philadelphia and allentown as well as coatesville. we are ten degrees warmer in wilmington. six degrees warmer in atlantic city, and eight degrees warmer in vineland. so many areas are five to ten degrees higher than yesterday which puts many spots right near freezing instead of the low 20s. not bad. we're at 33 in philadelphia. 26 mt. holly and 30 in dover. allentown you're at 28. here's the best news yet. you might say there's nothing on the map, krystal, except for allentown. when a station is reporting calm conditions it doesn't show up on t

matt. >> reporter: right, rosemary. high level source tells nbc10 that there are some people who have not been accounted for, but at this point it's unclear if they had just left shelters with friends or family. but you look behind me here you can still see there is quite a bit of damage to this side of the building. a lot more damage once you see it from above and the back of this building. we also see some of the lights that are over there. the investigators and the firefighters have been here throughout the night. in fact, in the last half hour we saw one of the firefighters still spraying water on this building here. but there is a lot to go through. the damage is extensive here at the barclay friends senior living facility. the intense fire forced more than 150 people, many of them elderly and disabled to escape into the cold late thursday night. we do know that more than two dozen people were taken to hospitals. neighbors and staffers are now worried and sad wondering who if anyone is still inside that building. w

randy. >> reporter: good morning, rosemary. it's going to be a chilly morning so if you're coming down here to south philly, bring a jacket. you might get a lot of exercise and even break a sweat. they're doing a three-mile walk beginning here at citizens bank park. you can see they're still setting up the balloons this morning. the walk will take them past wells fargo into the fdr park and then back here to the bank. all an effort to promote physical activity and heart healthy living. this is the american heart association's biggest number one fundraiser. and this year they're hoping to raise $2.5 million here in philadelphia. heart disease and stroke are the number one and number five killers of americans. one of the people walking today we got a chance to meet 35-year-old amy cavalier, who learned that heart disease can strike at any time to anybody with no warning. the busy mother of three woke up one morning with pain in her arm and chest and she couldn't breathe. >> having known the signs of heart attack but never in a mi

. >> reporter: good morning, dray and rosemary. we also have a light rain here right now so that's something the runners will have to deal with. we have about 30,000 runners taking part in the philadelphia marathon. the full marathon today. just behind me you can see they're starting to get ready to put up the starting line here. this is where all the runners will be lining up about 90 minutes from now. the volunteers, race officials and police are wrapping up the preparations. the weather is the biggest story of the morning with the wet roads and the winds starting to pick up as we look at the parkway. we see the light breeze having an effect on them. temperature wise it doesn't feel too bad at this point either. now you have to factor in the wind. the half marathon was yesterday. the course today is double the size in dent. take a look at this map here, 26.2 miles. you can also anticipate there are those road closures in effect throughout the area so bare that in mind. another live look here along the parkway. we're about 22nd st

. >> let's go to rosemary connors. you spoke with someone who felt the tremors there at the airport. >> reporter: i did just a short ago. i spoke to maria and paul. they are from immediate delaware county. in the last hour pfr you're heading out to catch a flight and making sure you have everything, all of a sudden they felt that shaking. here's how maria describes it. >> it was about 4:45. i was in the kitchen washing dishes and i felt the house starting to shake. and i thought it was our washing machine, which is is u right above me. i thought do i have it on? and i couldn't remember whether i did or not. it's too late. the clothes were finished. and the house was shaking. i had no idea what it was. i thought maybe the house was shaking. >> she was on the phone with her parents who live around the corner from her. they did not feel anything. her husband was stairs grap grabbing a quick shower. so certainly it depends on where you were if you felt that shudder, that shaking or rattling. back here at everything is movi

i'm rosemary connors. it's 6:30 on this sunday. meteorologist krystal klei is keeping track of our weekend weather and a change in the weather. krystal, fill us in. >>> yeah, so we are going to start seeing temperatures gradually warm up. today is going to be a little better than yesterday. you can tell when you look at our temperature where they sit currently. we're at 32 right now in philadelphia. at 29 in wilmington. 23 mt. pocono. that's still cold but not the teens we saw yesterday. atlantic city, you're at 27 degrees. now for a look at what it feels like outside. most of the numbers are very close to or the exact same as the actual temperature. that's the big difference. yesterday it felt like the low teens across the entire map because the winds were about 10 to 15 miles an hour. today the winds are light and that's helping us out a lot. the only places that are reporting, meaning they're not calm, are very low value. so we're in good shape thanks to lighter winds this morning. on radar and satellite, some clouds. these are

rosemary connors is live near the scene in manhattan hearing more from people who witnessed the attack firsthand. >> erin coleman is live in our breaking news center with what we've learned about the suspect. >> reporter: a big part of the investigation right now is sorting through the suspect's history online. so far, there is no indication that he communicated with anyone prior to the attack. today, we're learning much more about the accused attacker. 29-year-old sayfullo saipov. >> based on the investigation overnight, it appears mr. saipov had been planning this for a number of weeks. he did this in the name of isis. >> investigators say the uzbekistan native is a self-radicalized terrorist. since the attack he has been unremorseful, in fact he has bragged about what happened. >> he appears to have followed almost exactly to a t the instructions that isis has put out in its social media channels before with instructions to their followers on how to carry

i'm rosemary connors. it's 6:00 and that bitter cold is still hanging around out there this morning. the big chill is on. our first alert weather team has issued a first alert. they did that yesterday because of the blast of arctic air. it continues this morning. what does a first alert mean? it means we want to make sure you're prepared, little shock to the system because we had temperatures that were so warm over the past week. some neighborhoods this morning have already set record cold temperatures and others may continue to fall. first alert meteorologist krystal klei is keeping us up to speed with all the details. krystal, fill us in. >> it habiterly co -- habiterlsy cold. areas like trenton, wilmington and allentown. we have cold afternoons, not just cold in the morning but even the afternoon hours we don't see much of a warmup both today and even tomorrow. but here's the good news, we're seeing some slight warming in the trend moving forward. a little bit of a pickup tomorrow, bit of a more pickup

randy. >> reporter: good morning, rosemary. we're live here on the rocky steps. and despite that frigid cold you've been talking about there are a lot of outdoor events today, both for veterans day and as you mentioned the big rocky balboa annual run. thousands of people out here on the rocky steps doing their best sylvester stallone. ♪ the eye of the tiger >> reporter: the race kicked off with temperatures below freezing hovering around 25 or so degrees. a lot of people wearing that iconic rocky gray sweatpants and hoodie combination. this event raises money for the special olympics. some people here running 13 miles and with a really brisk wind in their face this morning you really had to keep moving to stay warm. >> pretty cold. >> pretty cold. >> great. >> i'm from green bay, wisconsin, this is like a day at the beach. i'm rosemary connors.s just a few minutes before 7:30 on this frigid saturday. meteorologist krystal klei is tracking those cool, chilly, darn right cold temperatures out there, krystal. >> oh, yeah, rosemary, it's brutal oult there this morning. these are the feels like conditions and they have not budged all morning long. in fact, a few spots have actually gone down a couple degrees. it feels like 11 degrees in reading and lancaster, 13 degrees in philadelphia and mt. holly. 17 the best in millville and allentown also a little better off at 19. why? because the winds are a little lighter there so it doesn't feel quite as bad. but mt. pocono, 1, that's what it feels like outside right now, 1 degree, we're actually at 24 in philadelphia currently. around 35 at 11:00 a.m. and 40 at 3:00 in the afternoon. that's the high today. mostly sunny conditions and temperatures that feel like 30s at best. >>> new this morning, a salt truck is working to fix an icy situation that was created by a water main break, this

i'm rosemary connors. >> and i'm dray clark. it is 6:00 on this sunday morning. we have issued a first alert for damaging winds. the road was wet and certainly in some spots you could feel that wind. >> and the wind is cranking up in a few spots. i was just checking if there are damage reports, one that i see so far with a utility pole. the winds are strong enough to cause a few issues for this morning. this is not a major danger but you need to watch out this morning. this is now 4:00 in the afternoon. i think the focus of the strongest winds as it's passing through the area. >> it's a windy day no matter how you slice it. there have already been reports in this range particularly overnight in the midnight hours or so. we saw some high gusts reporting in areas like delaware, burks county had gusts above 40 miles per hour. still continuing to be the potential for us and, again, like i mentioned, downed tree limbs, power outages are possible for us. look at the wind gusts in wilmington and coatesville up to now 41-mile-per-hour gusts in coatesville. the front is m

.>>> will check in with rosemary. a beautiful fall day out there. >>> we have our eye on the next storm. it is expected to move in by wednesday. let's get right to the radar. we will take a look at the dry conditions overhead. a chilly start but fair skies and temperatures feeling pretty good. running cooler than where we were 24 hours ago. into the afternoon, very quiet weather in store before the next system will come into the bay area. this system is expected to tap into a system right here and the two combined could bring us the strongest start we seen so far. we decided to issue a flash flood watch that will start tomorrow afternoon to go through the overnight hours into thursday morning. it does include the northbay valley locations for the burn areas. again, it will start late tomorrow into the afternoon and last into thursday morning. and includes areas from cloverdale down to san rafael. napa is included in their -- napa is included in there as well. here's what we are expecting as we get into night and tomor

let's go over to rosemary. >> reporter: we are watching the rain. today you have a little bit more time, depending on where you live. >> this is a nice day to wind down. rain is falling across parts of the north bay. we have had some beautiful pictures come in on twitter. this one is from livermore. a beautiful start to the day in most areas. most areas are starting out dry. that will change over the course of the next few hours. north bay is seeing quite a bit of rain already this morning. accumulation is starting to register. we are looking for about a half of an inch with the system. a lot of people are traveling and the roadways will be wet. we have green on the screen and some pockets of yellow indicating moderate rain. highwinds in petaluma and sonoma. a little closer to areas on the coastline, we have highway 1. these are all covered in green. down in marin there is also rain falling there. this stretches over toward saratoga and south bay. we are keeping an eye on the sierra. snow levels are high. we have rain and wind. snow levels will drop

we'll say good morning to rosemary. reporter: it's relatively mild out there. we could easily be in the 30s this time of year. we're inthe 50s. we do have a little fog for our early morning drivers through our north bay valley locations. we'll check in on that in just a moment. here's a look at another start where we are looking at a little fog. i just checked sfo, no delays reported so far. san francisco, 57 degrees. low 50s oakland, livermore, 60-degrees in san jose. with if cloud cover in place, temperatures not budge a whole lot. we are looking at visibility issues for portions of the north bay. its really thick in some areas along highway 101, highway 29, highway, the perhaps 16. that darker shade of gray indicating visibility down to about a quarter mile. outside of that visibility, it looks pretty good for the central and south bay and winds are generally light out there and we are going to remain with light winds for today. temperatures will be in the upper 60s to low 70s. not a lot of change going on for the start of your weekend, but wet weather learn

i'm rosemary connors. it is 6:00, not 7:00. i hope you remembered to turn your clocks back, and all of them, because you get a little confused. i know i'm going to go home and see it. wait a minute -- no, it's all right. meteorologist krystal klei is tracking the forecast with us. she is up and at it this morning. >> that extra hour i think helped, feeling nice and fresh this morning. radar and satellite showing us that overnight we've had rain move through. with the best of the rain already moving out of our neck of the woods you can see it's offshore and was mostly a steady rain. instead now although it looks completely clear, i think there are patchy areas of drizzle and fog this morning. mostly focused north. our visibility is fine. look at the wider view here. we still have some showers and even thunderstorms popping up in the western part of pennsylvania. as this moves i think it will sheft along to the northeast so it may clip parts of the poconos, lehigh valley, and we still have a chance of isolated showers throughout
