rosemary? >> yeah, i wanted to talk to you about that because charleston topography does make it very vulnerable in a hurricane situation like this. talk to us more about that. >> reporter: i mean, really all you need to do, rosemary and for our viewers, just look at a map of charleston. you can see clearly it is a vulnerable city because of its proximity to the ocean. literally the charleston harbor is open directly to the atlantic ocean, so there is nothing between an approaching hurricane and the city center. for our international viewers, this would be something similar to hong kong, for instance, if a t typhoon was approaching the area. we have a competing water source. the heavy rain we're experiencing now, 3 inches an hour, 72 milammeters an hour for our international viewers. that falls inland, makes its way through the tributaries and meets up with the approaching storm surge from the hurricane and that forces the water to rise in the city. in fact, some of the forecasts call for some

i'm rosemary church. hurricane dorian is growing more powerful.ck up to a category 3 as it batters the southeastern coast of the united states. parts of georgia, south carolina and -- they're all feeling dorian's wrath. and it didn't cause significant damage as it moved up the coast of florida over the last day. unlike in the bahamas where it left behind unprecedented destruction. at least 20 people have died. that toll is likely to go up as search and rescue efforts continue. how dorian has -- now dorian has its sights on the carolinas where it is already flooding charleston in south carolina. and in the bahamas, picking up the pieces from hurricane dorian could take years. our paula newton is on the ground in abaco and describes the devastation there. >> reporter: right now i have to say the one thing that's stark is i'm looking at stars and that is good news. this is the first time they've seen clear stars. and what is it showing us? the light of day and it's even quite eerie in the nighttime. it's absolute destruction because you see all the d

i'm rosemary church at cnn world headquarters in atlanta. hurricane dorian has been weakening slightly over the past several hours. it's now a category 3 but as you can see from this image from the international space station it remains a very large and very dangerous storm. it's been stalled for more than a day now over the northern bahamas, at least five deaths are reported there. a u.s. coast guard helicopter medevac'd 19 people from abaco island to nassau but bringing in emergency aid will have to wait until the hurricane passes. >> it's absolutely, you know, catastrophic conditions, those weather -- what we're seeing with the hurricane is absolutely overwhelming and we're obviously getting our rescue crews that are in the bahamas as close as we can to help out, but the conditions there with the hurricane stationary over grand bahama island, there's no ability to get in there with any assets right now. >> well, mandatory evacuations are under way in coastal communities from florida to north carolina. more than 2700 flights have been canc

rosemary will have all the details on that in just a few minutes. live in freemont, ktvu, fox 2 news. >> all lanes up north 680 were shut down for six hours following a crash and large fuel spill. ktvu has the story from. >>> it was a mess of a monday morning commute here on southbound 680 and northbound 680. all of the northbound lanes were shut down for hours this morning because of a big rig that jackerknifed on the freeway. it happened before 2:00 in the morning. the chp says there was a big rig traveling just past mission boulevard. they hit the center median. once it jackknifed, a fuel tanker hit it sickeds later puncturing the fuel tank just enough where 3800 gallons of fuel spilled out on to the freeway. there were two other cars also involved in the crash, but everyone here is said to be doing okay. the driver of the big rig complained of some minor injuries. the focus now is on cleaning up all of the fuel. line >> reporter: was covering all lanes. they are going to be out here cleaning up. hopefully we can get this stuff cleaned up before

. >> and i'm rosemary church. we are keeping a close eye on this very powerful storm. >> the bahamas right now they keep getting blasted, keep getting hit by the strongest hurricane to ever hit the island. dorian a devastating category 5 storm. winds of 175 miles or or 300 kilometers an hour. it's moving at a snail's pace, crawling there and expected to stay over the bahamas for the next 24 hours. >> the storm has destroyed homes and ripped the roofs off buildings in the abaco islands. flooding is also a major concern with the storm surge up to 23 feet or 7 meters. the northwest bahamas could see as much as eight months' worth of rain in just a few days. >> and then take a look at this. you get a sense of how big and vast this thing is from the international space station. it's the strongest storm anywhere on the planet right now and noaa released pictures of dorian's eye wall. wow. right in the middle there. you get to see the stadium effect, that's a phenomenon that you see when you're in the middle of the storm

. >>> let's go over to rosemary. she is tracking hurricane dorian and has more on our bay area weather. >>> good morning. we are still watching dorian who is not going anywhere anytime soon. we are giving a look at the satellite and radar. you can see the bahamas are still being pummeled with torrential rain as well as devastating wins. as we move a little closer income you can see areas of daytona beach as well as orlando and fort pierce. all the way down toward miami. now beginning to see those rain bands. that is only going to increase as dorian inches away from the bahamas and moves a little bit closer to florida. here's a look at the current conditions over dorian. category 2. it has weekend, although the storm is continuing to expand. the wins right now, 110 miles per hour moving northwest at two miles per hour. it is literally crawling toward the coastline. it is still a going like the storm will skirt the coast. we've been talking about this for some pie time. the high pressure continues to weaken and the tro
