larry rosenthal would have turned 62 today. he's been my friend for almost 40 years, my closest political adviser, my confidant. we lost larry over the summer. i wouldn't have been a member of congress without him. i wouldn't have been as successful as a member of congress without him. he was by my side every step of the way. he really was family. to my family, especially my wife jennifer, i say thank you. she's stood by me and given up the most through my public service here. and i know, at least i think, she'll be glad i'll be home full time. she has put up with a lot, so thank you, jennifer. she's done so having to deal with her own health struggles. she's my hero. i'm grateful to my kids, my son ryan, my daughter-in-law ginger and their children, the two most perfect grandchildren ever to occupy the earth, katelyn and collin. to my son kenneth who lives in new york, my daughter katie, they have put up with my schedule. they've given me the reason and the inspiration to continue to fight on. they've supported and defended me

so now for tonight's event, i would like to introduce our guest speaker, nathan perl-rosenthal is a historianof the 18th and 19th century atlantic world. he focuses on the political and cultural history of europe and the americas in the age of revolution, with particular attention to the transnational influences that shaped modern national politics. he received his ph.d. in history, columbia university, in 2011 with a dissertation done on. i'm not going to be able to pronounce that word correctly. we're going to say revolutionary organizing with a ph.d. on revolutionary organizing excellence. he is the author of citizen sailors becoming an american in the age of revolution and his essays and reviews have appeared in all of the big journals william and mary quarterly, the american historical review and the journal of, the early republic. i should also say that i was a baby graduate student and i was in the los angeles for a year with my husband's work, and i was kind of hanging around the huntington doing research and looking for a place to fit in. nathan was nice to me and said hello to me an
