if we think about a figure like rosie the riveter, who you see here in the famous painting by normanl on the cover of the saturday evening post during the war and then this poster on the right which is now famous but which was seen by hardly anybody and was just put up in one factory, it wasn't until it was rediscovered by feminists in the 1970's that it became the icon that it is today. this is a moment when women went into factories because of the shortage of labor, literally a shortage of manpower during the war, took over those factory jobs and were reluctant to relinquish them at the end of the war. one thing that's fascinating about this and rockwell's image of rosie the riveter gives a good sense of this -- they were very proud, professional tradespeople with high levels of skill putting together planes, boats, and tanks by hand. this was a real industrial craft and just as important for women in american history as men and something they were very sorry to lose at the end of the war. most women were obligated to go back to their domestic duties and have this sort of leave it
