thanks, ross. better than expected gdp numbers and comments from janet yellen helped markets in asia. the dollar/yen is inching towards the 100 handle, spurring exporter stocks and some short covering in future chasing ahead of the year-end book closing. so names like kggi, panasonic and isuzu motors among the biggest gainers jumping some 3% to 5%. china markets stabilized after yesterday's sharp sell-off. the shanghai composite added 0.6%. the hang seng index gained almost 1%. south korea's kospi ended marginally higher after the bok kept rates steady. i want to show smu chinese banks. in the mainland, mixed price lenders extended yesterday's sell-off after a sharp rise in rates. this comes after refrain from pumping liquidity into the markets. earnings news also in focus in hong kong. tencent had an earnings due to expand its messaging app. but investors still cheered a 35% gain in its online gaming revenue and shares jumped almost 5%. meanwhile, retailer and beermaker china resources enterprise

. >> thank you, ross. the dow's record close helped spur a rally in asia, but gains are modest as outflows on uncertainties for the fed's tapering timeline capped further up sight. the nikkei 225 hit six-month highs as the yen weakened 1-1 to the dollar. china markets saw profit-taking in out-performers such as media stocks, but hong kong, taiwan, south korea and australia all traded to the up side. and on to the big winner in japan, sharp shares jumped over 8% today to a seven-week high after reports that the company will supply china's zte with its power-saving displays. reports also suggest the company is in talks with apple to potentially provide other manufacturers display panels from its plant that currently supplies to the iphone maker. and moving on to china, reports say beijing is drafting new rules to crack down on shadow banking. the measures including taming the explosive growth in complex interbank transactions and some secret agreement guarantees are likely to be put in place early next year.

>> thanks, ross. yeah, i think there's a good opportunity or chance that china can make the -- more. they have been learning from europe for a long while and designed their own system. the seven-pilot system covers about 700 million tons of -- per atom, around 10% of its nationwide the emissions of carbon. but actually, that's just the start. because after the trial runs for about two years, one or two of the pilot pays will be rolled out to nationwide. therefore, nationwide ets systems on trading carbon will be established and, therefore, kek fully control the total carbon emission in china. >> it's a very aggressive target. how actually is the going to work? they're going to issue a certificate? presumably, the renewable operators have to step up to the plate a little bit. how are they going to deliver this reduction? >> well, the difference between eu trading system and china system is china is carefully designed the total emission, which is, of course, the supply of the demand of the credits. and

>> good morning, ross.n is shaping up to be the most competitive that we've seen since the fall of 2008. they're laying the groundwork to be highly promotional. essentially they've been carrying it all the way through right up until this past weekend. >> stakes are high because retailers get up to between 1/3 and 1/2 of all of their profits from this time of year. who will be under pressure? smart phones taking away from specialities and department stores. what's going to happen? >> yeah, i think you laid out the areas where the money has been flowing. i think the stores living under pressure will be in the mid tier. jcpenney, kohls, sears. apparel doesn't have any fashion going for it right now. there's no lack of a hot theme that we saw last year with colored bottoms and tops. we also look for some of the discounters to be in a little bit of difficulty, too, even though many of them will be prime destinations for lower to moderate income consumers. >> jcpenney's pretty much promised a good fourth quarter.
