it had nothing to do with rotc at all. if this board wants to continue to support this program, it seems to me we should be putting the pressure where it belongs, which is at the state level to allow this board to give, to have rotc to have this before the requirement, because that was our policy. i am a little disconcerted by this proposal. as commissioner yee said, we have not been able to get a straight word out of several entities. what does that mean? does that have to come back to the board again? does everyone still need to have a physical education credential if we decide not to do independent study? it seems to me it raises a lot of questions for the future, and i think i can speak for everyone on the board that we would not rather come up every two or three years because i think all of us are tired of talking about it and fighting about it. i do not know if staff, and i do not know if anyone can clarify what aipac might be for the board in light of the amendment we just passed, because it seems to me the superint

nine junior rotc teachers from the city's school district are trying to get a one-year extension on a deadline to save their jobs and the program. it wants time to earn a physical education cred dention to continue teaching. would two years ago, the district struck a deal to keep the junior rotc as an independent course for students. it would have fulfilled a physical education state requirement for high schoolers. however, many of the program' instructors do not have that physical education teaching credential. all nine teachers received layoff notices last month. >>> if you live in san francisco or you are heading there you might soon develop a green thumb. constituent proposing to transfer the care of 24,000 trees to private property owners. that move would reportedly save $600,000 in the next fiscal year. a public meeting will happen tomorrow more agent 10 at city hall. now, currently, property owners are charged with carrying 65,000 trees along sidewalks and the city takes care of another 31,000, plus those planted on the medians. >>> much more ahead on "today in the bay." still

independent study, rotc cadets for students that have jrotc and not p.e. and the passing rate for jrotc cadets is significantly higher in every case. and in three schools we had gallon le yo and burton, every ninth grade jrotc event pass the fitness gram in ninth grade. so one, i want to commend people for this. with all due respect and i have the greatest respect for the p.e. teachers and i have heard people talk a lot about how kids who have trouble with p.e., you know, that the people can't make them go no matter what they do, that they are -- have been doing much better when offered the option of doing their p.e. independently through the jrotc option and i was extremely moved this evening to hear students and i thank you all for coming when you're not in school, i really appreciate that. to say that this gave them more flexibility academically. i think we should at least recognize that there should be anna bit of unintended positive here, occasionally that happens to us. so i -- you know, i urge my colleagues to pass this. i have my nervousness about

he became a leader in the air force your honor rotc -- air force junior rotc. he became drill demander and captain and rose to the rank of lieutenant kernel. juan dreamed of one day attending the air force academy but he was unable to do so because he is undocumented. instead, juan enrolled in arizona state university. this is a photograph, more recent photograph of juan on his commencement day at arizona state university. juan graduated from arizona state university with a degree in aeronautical engineering. since graduation, juan has been waiting for his chance to either serve in our military or to use his degree. he can't enlist, obviously, because he is undocumented, and he can't work in his field, the aeronautics industry, because of the same legal obstacle. he just sent me a letter, and this is what it said -- "the united states of america is the country i want to live my life in, where i want to flourish as a productive citizen, where i want to grow old among my lifelong friends, where i want to one day fall in love and raise a family." what we heard fro
