when you walk into the rotunda you're struck by the artwork that surrounds you.y represent a mix of different utah history. the four triangular paintings and the band around the rotunda were installed in 1934. they always intended to have artwork in these spaces but it wasn't until the depression era public works of art program that we were able to get funding to have artists complete the spaces. before the paintings depicted some of the four early explorations into the utah territory. the first europeans was father doedominguez. they were trying to find an overland route from santa fe to monterey, california. this painting depicts them at utah lake in 1776. peter ogden was a rough and tumble fur trapper. he was sent by the hudson bay company to create what they wanted to call a fur desert. they wanted to eliminate all of the fur trade in a certain area of the west to prevent americans from traveling into the british base. he had a pretty nasty reputation but he was one of the primary explorers of utah and we have the city ogden named after him. americans were tr

there's an outer one and an inner one as well as thirdly, this beautiful rotunda.l of that work will be done over the next two years or so. it will certainly be done before the next presidential inauguration in january 2017. of course we've got to have the capitol looking great on that day, and we will. they need tell you a little bit about that and how we go about fixing these cracked and missing pieces. many of the missing pieces, if we are able to save them and clean them up and reattach them, from a preservation perspective, that's what were going to do. there are some pieces of course that we cannot do that and going to have to recast them. we have awarded contracts to architectural fabricators that specialize in recasting cast-iron ornamentation and we are looking forward to working with them. we have hired a cast-iron repair company, all of this under an umbrella contract that they do all of this work for us. here is how they repair cracked. you will see on the right-hand side of that image a crack that has just been repaired. you see we are using a lock and

cantor held his big "i'm resigning" press conference on capitol hill today, on the other side of the rotundaliterally at the exact same time, the united states senate perhaps sensing that nobody was noticing what they were doing, the united states senate seized their moment out of the spotlight today to actually do something. this was the big bipartisan compromise bill to rye to reform the v.a., to open up more than two dozen new health facilities to serve veterans and to try to hire enough doctors and other professionals into the v.a. to actually meet the demand for veteran services instead of some company cooking the books to try to make it look like they were meeting veteran needs when they really weren't. senator bernie sanders of vermont shares veteran affairs and had introduced another version of this bill in february, the republicans filibustered it. but today the bill senator sanders worked out with john mccain, it not only got fastracked into a senate floor vote, it passed. it passed hugely, it passed 93-3. only three senators voted against it. the house voted unanimously, yesterday

we had that ceremony in the capitol rotunda. it was a great day. it was an uplifting day. to finally see the navajo code talkers receive their medals. i said then what i continue to feel now -- their service can never be forgotten and can never be diminished. chester nez was nod he is in his own life but proud of the code talkers and proud of the navajo traditions. in his later years, he visited schools and colleges all across the nation to tell the story of those navajo code talkers. in his memoir written with judith avila, he said, and i quote -- "i reminded myself that my navajo people had always been warriors, protectors. in that there was honor. i would concentrate on being a warrior, on protecting my homeland." close quote. as we mark chester's passing, we honor his memory, and with a renewed dedication to preserve our native languages, to keep alive the story of our code talkers, the heroic story of the navajo and also of other native american tribes and their codes and their commitment forever unbroken. today we say goodbye to this great hero, this humble man who s
