been brought into port by the italian coast guard, the passengers appear to have been abandoned in rough seasle smugglers. >> reporter: the italian coast guard took control of the vessel in the early hours of wednesday morning. these pictures show them being lowered on to the deck by helicopter. on board they found 970 desperate migrants mostly from syria and iraq but no sign of the crew. the ship left port six days ago, and after three days of terrible weather, it was apparently left on its own. the migrants locked in the hull. the italian navy brought the ship in to the italian port. the migrants are now being processed here in this school by italian authorities who are every stretched at the sheer scale of this latest migrant incident. most are from syria and iraq. they all speak of the terrible conditions that they have endured on board this cargo ship. some were on board for nine days and the journey cost anywhere here 6 and $9,000 for each person. they painted a grim picture of their voyage. >> like you know, no sleeping. they give you every day like -- just like that bread, you know? a

the seas are extremely rough. we're seeing warnings for storms and heavy seas throughout the morning here in italy. so that's going to hinder the rescue operation even more. one of the things they will have when they have first light in an hour or so here is the ability to use larger helicopters. they can only remove people from the ship by airlifting them off. and they're using helicopters that have the ability to function with night vision that can only take one, maybe two people off at a time. once they're able to use these larger aircraft they'll be able to take five or six people off at a time. so we'll assume that will speed up the efforts here. and if the seas do calm enough they might be able to get a ship close enough to do a different kind of transfer to sort of bring them off the top of the ship to another ship but they're nowhere near that right now, with the seas as rough as they are. they're even having a problem once they get these survivors off the ship to even dock in an italian port. at the closes

heavy rain and rough seas are making it difficult for search crews to find more victims. so far, seven bodies and that's the new number seven bodies have been found. two of the bodies from the crash site arrived by helicopter at a base in indonesia. authorities are working to identify those victims. they're collecting dna samples and pictures from relatives to help speed up the process. meantime dozens of ships and aircraft from multiple countries are involved in search-and-recovery efforts, including a u.s. navy destroyer. debris from the plane was first discovered yesterday off the coast of borneo. search crews have yet to find the plane's black boxes, but they think they have found a large piece of wreckage under the water. they can see a huge shadow. also investigators say one of the bodies pulled from the water appears to be a flight attendant wearing airasia's trademark red uniform. they say that fully-clothed body suggests that the plane may have been intact when it hit the water. we're monitoring the feed. we'll keep you updated on any new developments. live in th
