routh gives rambling answers. last week the prosecution called two witnesses who said that he was not insane. he knew what he was doing and did it anyway. he spent more than ten hours interviewing routh. he says routh was a heavy drencher and marijuana smoker who was drunk and high when he shot the two men at this texas gun range. the defense on the other hand closed its case with a different doctor, a psychiatrist who says routh was a schizophrenic and was so paranoid he thought coil and littlefield were pig assassins, sent to execute him as part of pigs taking over the earth. but prosecutors say he made up the pig story after watching too much tv. they say he's a fan of seinfeld and boss hog. a series of voice mails were played routh left on chris kyle's phone before the shooting. one included a bizarre rant about the weather. he concludes the than on the phone is sick and doesn't know what he's talking about. >> he's in a delusion. he believes in his mind that they're going to kill him. >> the jury also got a c

the investigator asked routh, after you killed them what did you do next? routh responds. i fled.lse to do. mia dren na lynn was so high. i didn't know what was write, i didn't know what was wrong. the investigator would come back to this nearly half a dozen times leaving routh alone and coming back to ask him repeatedly if he knew that killing kyle and littlefield was wrong. he said he didn't know and then he said he knew it was wrong. the detective asks routh what he would like to tell the victim's families. i would tell them i'm sorry for what i've done. prosecutors say the tape proves routh knew what he was doing. >> mental illnesses, even the ones that this defendant may or may not have had don't deprive people from the ability to be good citizens from knowing right from wrong. >> and, carol, the reason you can't hear eddie ray routh's voice on the tape is the judge is not allowing us to broadcast the audio of these videotapes and what's going on in the courtroom until after the trial ends. >> you couldn't hear his voice? >> yeah, we're just not allowed to broadcast it yet. >

but now routh's mental health is up for debate. two years ago during what was meant to be a they were session to help him cope with ptsd routh shot chris kyle and chad littlefield at a texas gun range and fled in kyle's truck finally surrendering and later confessing in a rambling 50-minute video. the defense's mental health expert tells the jury routh suffered from schizophrenia at the time believing pigs were taking over the world. saying his victims were pig hybrids and assassins. the psychiatrist told the jury after leaving the marine corps routh checked in to mental health centers many times including the v.a. and was diagnosed with psychosis, ptsd depression mood disorder and substance abuse problems. but experts on both sides downplayed ptsd as a possible factor in the crime. >> the insane defense in particular in texas is a very narrow defense. often becomes a battle of experts and the extent by which the jury gives weight to their testimony. >> reporter: the prosecution's expert told the jury routh was not insane but high.
