i want to bring in ted rowlands. he said he believes there's going be more violence.in what is happening in the city? >> the mayor and other people think the opposite is true and that this is not -- this was an anomaly that seven people were killed. the murder rate is the lowest it's been since 1963. overall crime down 14%. they believe that the things they put into place, the procedures over the last year and a half, two years are now working. they are optimistic that this was an anomaly and hoping crime will stay down. >> while our homicides were up last year, our crime went down. shootings are down 30% across the city. i think you have to do certain things so it's not a blip and not just a window of time but it's ingrained. i think we're doing the right things to do that. i think it's way too soon for anybody to say it's a success or a blip. >> there are more cops on the street. they are implementing higher curfews, stringent curfews. they're confident that what they have done that this is going to change things forever. that's they're hope but as you heard the may

. >> let me bring in ted rowlands. standing in front of that suspect's home in ashland, ohio. ted, you have learned some pretty disturbing new details about this case. what is that? >> reporter: well, brooke, here's the bottom line. the more this unravels, as you just alluded to, it is complicated. it's not black and white. the federal government says they have an ironclad case. the depiction they give you is absolutely disgusting. according to a source she was given dog food at one point. they treated her and her daughter worse than they did the animals. pit bulls, snakes, iguanas. this is the house. it's divided into three separate living quarters. they were living first in the back one, then the middle one. someone else living up top. there are neighbors all around. it's in a back alleyway. you talk to neighbors. they say, yes, she was able to come and go because they'd see her coming and going. but they never saw the daughter. whether she was told you go and you better come back or something's going to happen to yo

. >> ted rowlands is live at the courthouse and following this. close rings for. a case did these prosecutors make? >> reporter: well, the prosecution has made a very compelling case. the question is did the jury believe brett seacat while he was up on the stand? what he did do what he did do is he had an answer for all the allegations. the bottom line is will the jury believe his story and at times watching the jurors faces it's going to be touch for them. >> reasonable doubt. do you get the sense there was enough of it mounted by his defense for the jury to consider? >> i think with the handwriting expert, yes. there was reasonable doubt. we're talking about a suicide note that the prosecution allegations seacat wrote himself. in terms of the details of what happens that night it only takes one juror. it's a tough sell to think a mother of a 4-year-old and 2-year-old got a can of gas, lit the house on fire and shot herself with a .45 magnum. >> what's reasonable to me and you may not be reasonable to anybody else and that's why juries are so unpredictable. thank

let's go to cnn's ted rowlands live in kingman, kansas, covering the trial for us.y did this friend say on the stand? >> reporter: well, we had a couple of friends now come to the stand here and testify. the first one was last week and this was a co-worker, a woman by the name of joy trotnic. she said out of the blue, she's talking with vashty and says do you think brett would burn the house down with me in it? joy was floored and asked her to repeat it, what are you talking about? do you think brett would burn the house down with me in it? this is the first indication to the jury that she was predicting her demise in exactly this fashion. and then within the last $40 minutes we heard another co-wr com up more descriptive w sd she flat out heard vashty say to her and another co-worker that brett had threatened her. fa if anything happened with their marriage, he would, quote, ite it look like a with her in suicide. very damming evidence within the last hour here as the prosecution conties itscase they have been at it for eight days now. we're expecting the defense w
