looking live at royal air force base mildenhall where u.s. air forces are based.f, give us an update. >> reporter: geoff, air force one just touched down here a few minutes ago. we saw the blue plane passing between these military building s and a flurry of activity on this base. we saw u.s. military humvees moving around. this base is home to the 100th air refueling wing. this say key unit that keeps military aircraft in the sky on long missions, above europe and above africa. president biden will be going straight to speak to some of the 1600 -- i'm sorry, 16,000 american military personnel on this base. he will be addressing them. this is the first stop on a trip where he is trying to show the world that the u.s. is ready to once again lead the world's democracies to be strong on the global stage, to stand up to authoritarian regimes, like russia, like china. this trip begins with meetings with allies here in europe, but it's going to end with that summit face-to-face with vladimir putin. so all the way through president biden will be looking to project strengt

you've been watching president biden addressing troops at the royal air force mildenhall in suffolk, england. he's going to be busy the next couple weeks beginning his first foreign tour as president of the united states. the president making very clear here that he respects and honors the military and the sacrifice military families make so we're protected. he will represent them well. the president will make a great deal of stops and important meetings including with the queen of england. this will be her 14th meeting with a u.s. president dating back to harry truman. of course, very eagerly awaiting that meeting. the president will gather with the other major western power heads of state. they are more his cup of tea on issues like climate change and the other issues. we'll see how that goes. there's been concern among some that some of these efforts are going to disproportionately be borne by the united states. we'll explore that in greater detail. the biggest moment will be the meeting with vladimir putin and therein lies the debate as to whether that meeting should take place.

in the early attack of the v1, the royal air force had priority over the skies to take down the v1's.ery quickly, several thousand people died and it became clear the raf was not doing enough to take down the the ones. most of their airplanes were not fast enough. you see reports of the raf having to dive down to catch up with them. i saw one report were part of the plane were piling up -- were flying off because the pilot was putting it under such stress. they had a lot of guns between london and the coast and churchill said, let's move these to the coast and we can equip them with smart fuses. that is what was done. they had 700 guns, 80 american on what was called the diver coast. v ones were also called divers because of the way they fell from the sky. they gave the guns air priority. meanwhile, the smart fuse had been calibrated to tackle the v1. section t had a firing range in new mexico in which they were aligning the sensitivity of the fuse. they wanted to get the shrapnel pattern of the shell to align with vulnerabilities of the aircraft. we had a mockup of the v1 based on hu
