well, the royal mail has spotted an opportunity.and maybe more, as our science editor rebecca morelle has been finding out. it looks like a pile of rubbish. and for most of us, it is. these are from all of the electronic goods we throw away. but here at the royal mint, they're discovering a new use for this rapidly growing e—waste problem. these old circuit boards contain a lot of different materials. there's aluminium, there's plastic, there's steel, there's tin, there's copper. but what they're interested in here is gold. there's a tiny amount of it on every single board. the question is, how do you go from this, to this? the answer, to build a brand new e—waste processing facility on an industrial scale. first, the circuit boards are pushed through a giant oven to heat them up so their components fall off. then they're sieved, and sorted, sliced and diced. anything containing gold is set aside. what we're doing here is we're actually urban mining, so we're taking a waste product that's been produced by society and each one of us
