roz plater is in dublin and continues our coverage. roz? >> reporter: indeed i'm in the dublin hills and i'm going to step out of the way and show you what we just spotted not long ago behind us here. smoke in the distance. so it's over that ridge there. we're trying to make calls and find out where that may be coming from. we are hearing about fires in antioch and fires in the brentwood hills. we'll try to get more information for you. this is exactly what firefighters have been talking about. the conditions are dangerous this weekend and can get to something like this, a big fire. that's what they've been preparing for. all agencies across the board are taking an all hands on deck approach. one of the three extra aircraft cal fire have brought in is stationed in sonoma county. on this first red flag warning day since the devastating wildfires last fall, the agency is beefing up its staff and equipment. >> increased staffing not only engines or hand crews or bulldozers, you know, in addition to our normal fleet, our air fleet, we've brough

nbc bay area's roz plater joins us in the city with the details. roz? >> reporter: tragic indeed, raj. tonight the business owners in north beach are mourning a merchant who was well liked and respected and who is dead tonight apparently over a bottle of wine. sami batshoun had owned the north beach food mart for and al going strong. >> sami, he's my neighbor, my t. he's such a nice, nice guy. now we'll all miss him. >> you'venown him a for long time? >> yeah, long, ltime. very nice guy. everybody loved him. >> reporter: police say on thursday afternoon, a suspect ran into the store yelling. then he stole a bottle of wine, and as he ran out, he knocked the 85-year-old store owner to the ground, badly injuring his head. batshoun died on sunday. >> my heart sunk. >> reporter: paul sanchez runs a sign business in north beach. >> i really feel for the family, you know, and for the community. i think it's kind of shaken up north beach quite a bit. >> reporter: police initially arrested the suspect. 31-year-old garrett miller on shoplifting and elder abuse, b

roz, this is not the first time for a fire at that spot? >> reporter: no, at least they've been here and tell me at least twice, the same area for a fire. cleared the scene. they were so worried. show you why earlier. that building, the gray part butting out part of a brand new apartment building under construction, and maybe it's about 20 feet or so away from where those flames were raging out of control earlier this morning. show you the video. firefighters say the building was -- what they were confronted with when they got here just after 2:00 this morning. flames shooting up some 30 feet through the roof of this abandoned building. they fought with ladder trucks and quickly called for a second alarnmics because they feared te flames might spread to the town homes behind where people were living and a brand new construction right next door. again, this was the second fire at least they've been to here. we're told it is a known site of a homeless encampment and don't know for sure what the cause of this fire was but have a team of invest

nbc bay area's roz plater joins us with details. >> reporter: state investigators hope shutting down this illegal operation will make a big differen difference. investigators say these boxes contain the nearly 50,000 pounds of illegal fireworks, some seized in the bay area just before the july 4 holiday. >> four semi truck trailers full of what are essentially weapons of wildfire, not to mention huge potential disturbances to our community. we have to put our foot down and say that's enough. >> seven people were arrested in the sting. investigators say it started with a tip from a concerned citizen. >> law enforcement officers have reason to believe these suspects have been illegally importing, transporting, storing, distributing and selling these products, dangerous fireworks throughout california. with indications that this practice has gone on for at least 30 years. >> investigators say jack schroll was arrested twice. no one answered the door at his walnut creek home. a neighbor said he spotted atf agents carrying out boxes about ten days ago. cal fire says fireworks each year st

roz, what can we do. >> reporter: i have a whole list in just a second. we spent part of the morning in the east san jose foothills with the cal fire chief -- division chief and pointing out what some of the dangers are. he said the peak crucial warning time will be starting at about 11:00 tomorrow morning and extend through about sunday night. now he said they are worried about two things, the wind vianey talked about or the dry conditions, just like this grass here which is just crumbling as you touch it and flying off to the wind. and that is the dry conditions and all over the east bay hills and that is one of the things that can be the biggest danger for them. now here is what they are asking four to do. make sure that you are careful using your lawnmower this weekend. make sure you don't toss out a cigarette. be careful to light a campfire or fireworks. any of that can touch off just one spark from something like that that can touch off a fire in an area like this and go up -- and it will go up very quickly. so again asking you to be careful. that r
