roz plater has the update from police in hyattsville. roz: we got the word about this accident, there is at least one fertility taliban from the accident, very tragic. this is east-west highway, near the entrance is to prince george's. this is near the outback steakhouse. we are waiting official confirmation from the police how the accident happened, but there is a car in the intersection smashed up. on the sidewalk, to my right there is a motorcycle on the sidewalk. one of the investigating officers there. a few minutes ago i spoke with a witness who had just given his account to the police. here is what he said. the motorcycle was coming westbound on east-west highway, smashed into the car that you saw in the intersection. the driver of the motorcycle he said went airborne, the motorcycle continued up onto the sidewalk, near the crosswalk where there was a family, a group of people, both adults and children, standing. motorcycle crashed into those folks and knock them into a tray. he said at least one of them was critically injured. he

roz plater said is causing changes. roz: victim "d" is 23 and finally getting justice for a crime dating back 10 years. >> i think god that finally after all these years, i'm happy about that justice was served. roz: one time montgomery county substitute teacher jose pineda will spend five years behind bars, than five years probation. he was accused of fondling three 12-year-old girls in separate incidents in clouded classrooms. victim "d" said he did the same thing to her in 2004. she reported the incident, but pineda stayed on the job in the complaint was never turned over to the police. when he was arrested last fall, the case prompted change in school policy. >> we owe a great debt of gratitude to our most recent victim, for her courage. that case has caused a monumental shift in the way the school system deals with these issues. roz: a spokesperson said they sought input from police and prosecutors on a new zero tower lights -- zero tolerance policy, saying that if any staff member becomes knowledgeable of child abu

roz plater is live at children's hospital with the study. roz: leon, children's national medical center is trying to save more d.c. infants. as the study shows, they have their work cut out for them. washington d.c., the nation's capital, has the highest rate of infant mortality among the 25 wealthiest capital cities in the world. that is according to a new study for the organization save the children. in 2012, in d.c.'s neighborhood ward eight, the rate of infant mortality is 10 times higher than the wealthiest neighborhood, ward three. this is a pediatrician with save the children. she says it boils down to poverty. >> inadequate services nutrition, education, that is detrimental. roz: and access may still be a problem even when our clinics in the team unity. >> sometimes there are mothers and families who have to take two buses to get to a facility it takes three hours they may have to forgo a half day of work. sometimes addressing those issues are too big to overcome. roz: she said there is still reason for hope. d.c. has cut its infant m

roz plater has the latest. roz: they could affect your commute if you take the memorial bridge from d.c. into northern virginia. the estimate is 55,000 vehicles per day on weekdays use the bridge. we don't know how long the partial lane closure will take. crews began closing the westbound, the outer westbound lane of the bridge after rush hour. the national park service says the move comes after engineers verified there was an area of concern. that verification came today. because the bridges already deteriorating, there are inspections every six months. this time they found an area of corrosion in the drawbridge portion. it has not been operational for decades, but they're finding sparked concerns and the need for further testing. memorial bridge is already in dire need of a major overhaul. structure was built in 1932 and there have only been piecemeal repair since then. they said it would likely cost a quarter billion dollars in a major overhaul could take several months. for the moment, the national park serv

roz plater has new information about some of the other victims. roz?oz: it is a beautiful memorial to the seven-year-old who died in the crash. we don't know who put it here at the site. we are learning new information about the injuries to the other victims in the crash. those injuries are much more serious than originally thought. the crash happened at about 4:00 on east-west highway knew the entrance to the prince george's mall. it motorcycle crashed into a car that was making a left turn into the mall. the rider was thrown from the bike in the motorcycle plowed into a group of pedestrians on the sidewalk. four people were struck, an adult male and three children. the man's injuries are considered life-threatening and one of the two surviving children has critical injuries. the police have not confirmed the relationship of the victims. the crash was so disturbing that one would miss came back to the site today unaware the little boy had died. >> that is really sad to hear. the child was lying on the ground. i just thought he was hurt really bad. i d
