. >> roz plater is live at the scene with more on the 6-year-old's condition. hi, roz. >> reporter: good morning. we are in the neighborhood where this happened, homes near the intersection of ohio wean mariposa streets, about a block or so down the street from a burger king, where police say the shooting happened. now here is what we know. police say that young boy was out in the street with his family last night, celebrating christmas eve. right around 6:30 last night is when the shots rang out, bullets were flying, multiple bullets. the 6-year-old was struck in the torso. we don't know how many times he was hit. when officers arrived, they discovered the child had already been rushed to the hospital in a car. what we don't know is how or why this shooting happened, how it got started or who the suspected shooter is. that is all part of what police are still investigating this morning. what we do know is that officers towed away a motorbike, we're told that is part of that investigation. now, sadly, the latest information we have from police is that that young

for now we're live in san jose, i'm roz plater for "today in the bay." >> thank you, roz. >>> less thanwo miles from that scene, deputies are also investigating another shooting, this one happened during a fight between at least six people on the key road near white road in san jose. officers were called to the scene around midnight. they say one person was shot in the leg, another person has a serious head injury after being hit with some sort of object. sheriff's deputies are still trying to piece together what happened. no arrests have been made. >>> orrin >>> a follow-up to city leaders unanimously voted to extend an emergency ordinance when it comes to short-term rentals on airbnb, requiring homeowners to live on the property when renting their home and if there are two homes on the lot, the host must stay in the larger, and rent out the other. councilmembers first approved it as an emergency ordinance last month and it will now be extended at least until next november. of course, it was all prompted by that halloween shooting where five people died at an airbnb. two people are cur

that is where roz plater has been all morning long with the latest on the search for the shooter. good morning, roz. >> good morning, kris. it is early in this investigation. police are urgently trying to peace together a motive and identify a shooter in this case. let all this is happening in a neighborhood not far from berryessa and matterhorn. the shooting happened after 2:30 this morning. san jose police officers have been on the scene here for hours evidence. there are multiple evidence markers on the ground and they have seenj:e examining what apps to be shell casings. an ambulance took one man to the hospital. police told us he'd been shot and has life-threatening injuries and police continue to have several nearby streets here shut down as they continue this investigation. they've also been going door to door, knocking on doors, looking for information as well. as we get more information on all of this, we will bring it to you. kris, back to you. >> thank you very much, roz. especially someone on the loose, we need to know that. thank you. we'll see you in a little bit. >>>

roz plater joins us live from the police department. you spoke to neighbors saying there has been an uptick in shoopt -- in shootings in that area. >> reporter: i did. one of the moms told her kids a zril drill, and some are afraid to let their kids outside. and here is what we know. police say it happened about 6:30 christmas eve in an area near ohio and mayor ip ossa where a bunch of kids were riding kids up and down the street and suddenly they heard shot fired. the 6-year-old boy was shot in his torso and someone rushed him to the hospital in a car. one neighbor heard more than a dozen shots rapid fire and sadly it has been happening on their street a lot lately. >> i was braiding my daughters hair and i heard a whole bunch of shots and everybody instantly got to the ground and when i looked up i didn't see anything outside so went back to normal and a 20 minutes later i heard sirens. >> and everybody got to the ground in your house?e why. >> because it is common thing my kids already know. as soon as you hear that, get to the groun

"today in the bay's" roz plater reports from oakland. >> reporter: from this view outside the home, you can see where the massive tree came crashing down. >> it was really one of the scariest things i've heard and experienced and you're not sure what's happening. is it an earthquake? >> reporter: it was so loud and so powerful, her neighbors came running. >> the sound of a large tree falling is unmistakable, and it just scares the heck out of you. >> reporter: they discovered it was an 80 to 100-year-old pine next door. it broke from its roots, dragged down part of an adjacent tree, and snapped a gas line. fortunately, it landed on the part of the home that houses the pool, and the family was in the living room. >> this tree fell at a diagonal that was extremely fortunate for the home. had it fallen straight, it would have gone right through the center of the house. we are safe now and we'll be cold but we can camp here or we have some neighbors we might stay with. >> reporter: they're worried because two more old trees hover over their home and their neighbors are a bit worried, too. >
