let's talk more about the situation in hawaii with ken rubin a professor at the university of hawaii.hank you for joining me. let's first talk about the explosive eruptions that could send boulders into the air. what goes into that? >> so what tends to happen, the volcano had a lava lake which is an area of the volcano filled with molten lava in a long narrow conduit. it looks like almost a cone shaped depression into the ground. when that is happening groundwater is kept out of the area because of the warmth of the lava on the surrounding rocks. because the lava lake has dropped very rapidly in the last 10 days or so, it is down to nearly 1000 feet below the rim. this will allow groundwater to come back into the area and the groundwater itself mostly flashes to steam when interacts but because the walls of the conduit are also unstable, rocks can fall off the wall down into the center of the conduit and help trap the magma and steam. so the water can interact together and cause that explosive ejection of materials. this happened in 1924 and it was quite dangerous in the immediate vic
