ann rubin reports. police say it was unprovoked? >> reporter: that's right. they say not only was it unprovoked but that the suspect punched the victim a walk away. >>> reporter: authorities say david gonzales of madera critically injured another man game. it happened in the parking lot outside levi's stadium. santa clara police believe the incident began when the victim kicked a bottle that landed near gonzales. they say that's when gonzales punched the victim in the head and watched him fall to the ground. after he got up, they say gonzales punched him again. >> there's no information that we have that the victim provoked any of this. as a matter of fact, prior to the second punch, some video that we have shows him walking away only to be punched that second time. >> reporter: authorities have not released that video but say it comes from the stadium's cameras. police were able to interview the victim, a 33-year-old man from san jose, before his condition took a turn for the worse. >> it wasn't until several hours, even up to a day later, until we checked b

ktvu's ann rubin reports. >> reporter: san jose police have been actively recruiting even traveling the country looking for the best and brightest and they say now that hard work is paying off. it's day one of the academy for san jose's newest police recruits. among them, philip, who left new jersey and a previous career in the medical field to be here. >> it's a big change. i'm not going to lie about it. and i have full support and, um, which is a big thing in my case. >> reporter: and he is not alone. in fact, 16 recruits, about one-third of the academy class, have come from out of state traveling from new york, new jersey and alabama. chief eddie garcia says that's unprecedented. >> when someone's willing to get up and move their lives clear across country to wear this uniform, i mean, not only does it make, you know, current family police officers proud, it should make any police officer that wears this uniform proud. >> reporter: it represents a big change for the department. a ballot measure in 2012 had affected their ability to offer competitive pension and benefit packages. by f

ktvu's ann rubin reports from the main jail in san jose. >> reporter: after weeks of training, this was graduation day for the new dogs. now, they and their handlers are eager to get to work sniffing and here at the jail. meet finn and ollie, the newest weapons in the war on drugs at the santa clara county jail. the spaniels can smell and find contraband the size of a postage stamp. >> he can do it all. he can probably jump 6-foot fences if he wants to. his work drive is amazing. he is an amazing dog. >> reporter: the jail has never had its own k-9 unit before but times have changed and the sheriff says something needed to be done to combat growing fentanyl usage. to being e had some overdoses fatalities. so i think it will help with that. and also, i'm hoping it will also be a big deterrent from people bringing drugs in. >> reporter: the dogs finely tuned noses can detect cell phones. they were selected for this skill but even more important was their disposition. >> this is cocaine. >> reporter: this trainer looked at about 70 dogs before choosing these two. >> that's one of the thing
