would it be marco rubio or ted cruz? >> reporter: well, if you look at the numbers, if you look at the polling, you might think it would be ted cruz. our latest poll shows that trump would lose to cruz but beat rubio. that was before trump amped up his attacks only on cruz, going after his eligibility, his personality. trump has not had a real battle with marco rubio. that's probably coming. that's probably when we will see who will have the more effective argument with voters. >> on the democratic side, what if hillary clinton does not win iowa? >> reporter: well, if secretary clinton doesn't win here in iowa, it would be devastating. but it wouldn't be fatal. she's trailing bernie in new hampshire. she has a tough fight there. but she has a big lead over him in places like south carolina, nevada and a lot of the super tuesday states. she spent a lot of time campaigning in those areas to try to build up a firewall in case that scenario here's the question. if sanders wins the first two states, would he have so much mome

real fast a comment about rubio. it's not fair to rubio. he did have a tough campaign in 2010. he has had a real race. he beat a governor of a state. that totally -- listening to rubio's comments where he's having to vote and chris christie planned parenthood donation. i think back to the debate in bolder, colorado, in october and rubio saying to jeb bush you're it would help your campaign. i'm not here to attack somebody else. how far have we come from that moment? i think you're seeing christie and cruz and both are trying to sort of move in for the kill and suggest that rubio is not strong enough. not able to have this kind of a fight. rubio did have a tough fight in 2010. i think it's going to be seeing to see how it plays out. both have been telegraphing punch to rubio for two or three weeks now. when jeb bush did that rubio knew how to throw out the block. i think there's a real chance. i'm assuming christie is going to lunge for rubio on thursday. thing is a more than good chance that rubio will have a pretty good response. >> that's, i mean, any this reality tv campaign

on the other side of the camera, imsomeone from the rubio campaign. >> the rubio campaign clearly wantsy the third-place standing right now in the polls. right now they'll be fighting for the one and two spot, but the rubio campaign believes if they end up a strong number three, they'll be able to make the case to the one party they're the one candidate that can take on cruz and trump in the super tuesday states. they want some separation between them and the governors in the if race. what that really means, probably something in the high teens is a good night for them, something into the 20s, they would probably be ecstatic if they got there. if they were nipping at ted cruz' heels or donald trump's heels, that would be a big night, but the low teens that could be considered underperforming for them so right now that's why they're spending very heavily. rubio has been crisscrossing the state from the northwest part to the eastern part of the state in just a matter of days. that 30-minute ad is airing in all of the markets in the state, clearly all trying to make sure they are that pers

rubio at 25. and kasich at 8. those numbers could change but i think the big question in people's minds, larry, is the ground game of donald trump. there have been report that is there really isn't that much of a ground game and if he's attracting all of these new caucus goers and they don't know where to go, how does that flush out? >> i don't think there's any question at all that his ground game is inferior to that of cruz's and probably several of the other candidates much lower down in the polls. will it matter? it makes some difference. the public opinion polls of iowa, i automatically subtract a few points from trump's total simply because we know he doesn't have that vigorous a ground game. they insist he has one. i think it's not the equivalent of the others. the other extreme there, as you noted, is ted cruz been to 93 of the 99 counties and pledged to visit all 99 and instead of being in some of the highly populated areas, he's visiting the leftover rural counties that aren't going to deliver many votes

a pac supporting jeb bush is targeting marco rubio in a series of campaign ads claiming rubio missed key votes and hearings. the gazette and kcrg-tv9 fact checker team tested the claims. the gazette's mitch schmidt has the results. ad: marco rubio was missing the ad from right to rise points out instances when marco rubio missed national security briefings for campaign events. then it adds this... "over the last three years, rubio has missed more total votes than any other senator." gov-track, a website that tracks congressiona l votes, shows rubio missed 177 votes, out of 11-hundred. that's more than 15- percent. most of those missed votes were in 2015, after rubio announced his bid for president. during last year alone, rubio missed almost one out of every three votes. data shows that's not uncommon candidates. fellow republican ted cruz missed about 24 percent of votes last year and lindsey graham, who has since dropped out of the race, missed 29 percent of votes. but rubio has missed the most over the three year period, which is why we give this ad an 'a' a pro- marco rubio pac c
