on the raid of rudolph giuliani's home in office. we are learning investigators seized 18 electronic devices from giuliani and multiple people who work for him. so senior analyst ellie joining me now. good evening to you. federal prosecutors are revealing the searches of giuliani and his ally victoria tensing were part of a multiyear grand jury investigation into conduct involving giuliani and others. does this investigation show this goes. deeper than we knew? >> it does. i think that is the most interesting revelation from this new paperwork. the southern district of new york, federal prosecutors, have had an grand jury investigation of giuliani dating at least back to 2019. we learned in 2019, the fbi got a search warn. we know they searched his home three weeks ago but they also got a warrant to search his icloud. prosecutors have to be able to show probable cause. probable cause that a crime was committed and when they go in search, giuliani's icloud, they'll find evidence of a crime. so this is a bigger investigation, a broader

there is new reporting about the fbi raid this week on trump's former personal lawyer rudolph giuliani. the wall street journal which msnbc confirms that investigators are looking in on radio rudy to the honorees role of getting marie yovanovitch fired from her post. that was spring of 2019. it was the new york times that brought this to life. the journal also matches other outlets reporting the feds want to know more about rudy giuliani's efforts to get ukraine officials to open investigations into the bidens ahead of the 2020 election. also, nbc news confirming the washington post reporting fbi agents paid giuliani a visit back in 2019. gave him a defensive briefing as it's known in the trade. morning him, quote, he was being targeted by a russian intelligence influence operation as he sought to gather opposition research from the biden family. the u.s. government made the warnings even more explicit releasing a public statement last year saying one of the people giuliani had been dealing with, ukrainian parliamentarian andre tokash is a russian intelligence asset. giuliani's lawyer

while that is happening, rudolph giuliani's allies have been pressing for legal fees.attorney general has been investigating the trump organization. at the same time the manhattan district attorney cy vance has been conducting a criminal investigation boo the former president's business practices. earlier this year his office was finally able to get ahold of the former president's financial records. and then last night, the latest development. the new york attorney general's office raised the stakes. they released this cryptic statement and that, we have informed trump organization that our investigation into the organization is no longer purely civil in nature. we are now actively investigating the trump organization in a criminal capacity, i know what the manhattan d.a. we have no additional comment at this time. okay, the new york office is teaming one the manhattan office. we can't find an instance when this happened before to get a sense of the comparison. in response, trump released a rambling denial but it is not clear what it mean for trump or the trump board.

so what might these prosecutors be looking for in rudolph giuliani's home and office?is evidence that there was a violation of a statute called the foreign agents registration act. this is a statute that says if you're going to advocate to the u.s. government on behalf of a foreign government official, you need to register with the department of justice. the reason why we have this law is because there is a belief that we need to know who is advocating for a foreign power, that it's important. it dates back to world war ii. and i think what they're looking for is to see is there evidence that he was advocating to president trump or others in the administration for the firing of ambassador yovanovitch in order to either provide him with political benefit or perhaps financial benefit. >>. >> why is it so significant that they would execute a search warrant that they got approval from a judge to go into his residence and office? why is that in and of itself actually a significant development in this particular context? >> sure. it's significant for a couple of different r
