i'm stephanie ruhle. here's what's happening now. two cities, 13 hours, 29 lives. in less than one hour the president is set to address these two mass shootings that claimed those 29 lives over the weekend, hinting this morning on twitter that a bipartisan deal on background checks may be on the table. all of this happened in a span of less than 13 hours. on saturday morning a gunman opened fire in a shopping area in el paso packed with thousands of people doing their back-to-school shopping. 20 were killed. more than two dozen were injured in a matter of just a few minutes. hours later in dayton, ohio a gunman wearing armor opened fire outside a popular bar. in less than 30 seconds, nine people were dead and another 26 injured. we have reporters on the scene in both cities to bring us the latest. i want to go first to el paso. morgan, the shooter was taken into custody and it is being looked at as a hate crime. what have we learned about the investigation? >> reporter: steph, good morning. right now as t

joining me now, my colleague stephanie ruhle. stephanie, i want to put up a tweet from our colleague at cnbc, steve lice maresmaliesman. probably needs to be stated again the president is increasing tariff the day after the fed chair warned that tariffs represent the single biggest threat to the u.s. and global economies. and he said it repeatedly. >> it's a stretch and steve could be hinting here. remember the president's top priority, he wants jay powell to cut rates in a big way. the president knows that the humming economy is his secret sauce. beyond president trump's base who is going to stay with him no matter what, there's a universe of voters, i just don't mean the investor class. i mean firefighters and teachers and those very focused on their pensions and 401(k)s who care about the market. i might not like the president, i might detest the president, but staying economically sound is so important for me, and they want the markets secure. when you see interest rates go down in a significant way, when the fed moves rates

stephanie ruhle picks up the coverage right now. >>> thanks so much. we start with breaking news out of hong kong where thousands of protesters have packed the main airport forcing officials there to cancel all departing flights for a second straight day and adding to the tensions surrounding months of pro democracy demonstrations. we'll go to the airport. what is going on? >> reporter: well, there are no flights going out. there are very few flights being allowed to land. 200 flights were canceled yesterday. this is one of the world's busiest transport hubs and it has come to a standstill because authorities are telling people to just avoid it. there are thousands of protesters here. we are on the departures deck. they are filling the arrival area as well. the crowds are starting to grow more restless. there's been more chanting in the last few minutes. among all of these thousands of protesters are also a lot of stranded passengers wandering around wondering what they are supposed to do. they have no information on when their flights are going to go.
