. ♪ >>> i want to introduce you to a woman named rushma.aybe you heard her speak and maybe you heard her story. we won't forget it here. last week recovery workers pulled the 19-year-old woman from the rubble of a collapsed garment factory in bangladesh. she had been buried underneath the debris for 17 days. cracks in the building had previously been detected and she says no one told her it was unsafe. >> no. >> no warning. >> translator: no one told me. everyone was looking to see which parts are cracked and i went in and see there is a wall where a little is cracked. the managers said it is water damage and you can work. >> more than 1,100 people were killed when that building crumbled to ground. they made clothes for ones very likely hanging in your closet. u.s. companies have an opportunity. they can make garment producing safer and they're baching. more than two dozen european clothing companies agreed to a five year legally binding safety agreement that requires independent inspections and safety upgrades. only two american companies

time with cnn leone la caany. >> reporter: pulled out of the rubble after 17 harrowing days, rushma'sr at a military hospital where she's recovering. no broken bones or serious injuries, but she's still weak. we're asked not to rattle or move her. from her hospital bed she described her unimaginable ordeal. >> translator: i keep sleeping off and on. i couldn't see anything. it was so dark. >> reporter: cracks in the building had already been detected but i asked if she'd been warned not to go to work. >> translator: no. no one told me. everyone was looking to see which parts were cracked. so i went in and i see there's a wall where a little bit is cracked. the manager said, this is just water damage, and you guys can work. >> reporter: day after day as the rescue efforts carried on above her she lay in pitch dark scarf ascavengen for food and water. >> translator: i was thirsty, so i drank. >> reporter: she had no idea how long she'd been inside. i asked if she heard the people outside during rescue efforts. she heard and saw nothing until the 17th day when it all changed. >> translat

. >> reporter: her name is rushma and her story is extraordinary. 16 days after a building collapsed, rescuers who long gave up hope of finding any signs of life discovered her in the rubble. not only did she survive but she is talking. the 19-year-old woman said she rationed two bottles of water according to reports and obtained the water and some dry food thrown into the debris by rescuers after the collapse. there was also an air pocket. cnn's dr. sanjay gupta says a lack of major injuries also helped save her life. >> no crushed bones or deep gashes. that's important because the energy to heal the wounds can sometimes, you know, take away from your overall survival. >> reporter: the lack of major injuries has also been seen in other remarkable rescues like one after the 2011 earthquake in turkey when an 18-year-old man survived in the rubble and crushed apartment complex for four days. in haiti, there were a number of rescues called miracles. this man survived in the rubble of a hotel for 11 days. >> the body will do a lot to try and survive. it will literally start to digest its
