"cbs north carolina" reporter emma wright is live at the wake county health department. what do we know about this first case so far? >> reporter: we know this person contracted the zika a. the health department says when they got home to north carolina they started to feel sick, had symptoms of the virus, went to the doctor. the doctor tested, that test came back positive. the health department says they've been carefully monitoring this person. and want to remind people there's no need to panic. the virus still can't be passed from person-to-person. began to proactively prepare for the possibility of the zika virus making its way to north carolina months ago. they say they've been keeping in close contact with officials about the virus and where it is spreading. associated with birth defects and linked to serious brain abnormalities in babies born to women who contracted it. it spread rapidly in cases of year. and some cases in the u.s. the past several months. the zika virus, again

i'm russ bowen. >> i'm stefan chase. thanks for watching us. we begin with the officer- involved shooting. a raleigh man killed monday afternoon. investigators tell us a senior officer was trying to arrest to kill dinkins. that ended up as a chase with dinkins being shot. the case has the naacp speaking out. emma, what's the reaction so far? >> reporter: akiel denkins was here on bragg street when he was shot by the raleigh police officer. it happened about 100 feet from where we are on the other side of the convenience store. his mother is understandably very upset. she hasn't been able to positively identify his body yet and has also had no official word from raleigh police that her son is actually dead. his mother, along with naacp president william barber, just had a meeting. record, he said it's not a cause for someone to be shot. he also said that he's glad that the fbi is investigating. he says he wants answers as soon as possible. the family. they say this has been a very tough night for them. >> yesterday, by the time they finished the

i'm russ bowen. naacp leaders and the family of 24-year-old akil denkins planning to gather later today. this comes in response to the deadly officer-involved shooting in south raleigh. he was shot and killed by officer dc twitty monday afternoon during an attempted arrest. officials released 911 and radio dispatch calls in the case but haven't released autopsy results at this time. >>> the starting salary for a firefighter in garner is thousands of dollars below the state average. today the wake county fire commission will consider their appeal for a raise. we talked with one firefighter who says he started as a volunteer with the department and loves working in garner and hopes the board does decide to give them raises. >> with all the classes we're taking, the certifications we're getting, how active we are in the community, the time we're missing from our families. i think as long as they look at that and how much we are -- putting on the line everyday, i think that will make a difference. >> the
