back to our top story now and that is of course the trump meeting in the demilitarized zone and russ feingold is with us now in asia political risk analyst scott from taipei nice to see you again russ what was your take from today i keep asking i guess that our correspondents was this just a really good photo opportunity or is it a stop a chance to kick start things again. that's a great question because that's going to be the challenge for president shrub as he tries to make a positive narrative out of today's events and we know he's certainly going to try to do that and he had emphasized even in his public remarks prior to actually meeting chairman kim that he deals with what he perceives to be a lot of fake news that doesn't give you fair credit for the progress to date and he points out how much tension there was in 2017 and that the nuclear tests and the long range missile tests have ceased there was some cooperation on repeat ration of u.s. soldiers remains even though we know that that's now slowed down as well but president trump will continue to battle and use his twitter feed and hi

where officials from both sides can meet back to russ feingold ross so very historic moment how much room is there on the u.s. side for compromise and some of those issues that lead to a complete breakdown in hanoi. it get it depends on what the demands are as far as verification the problem with north korea and past agreements that it's reached with the international community is that north korea never 5th fills its obligations they always seem to cheat now that was under kim's father or grandfather maybe it will be different this time especially if you get the trade off that he's seeking with the reduction in the international sanctions regime there's no hope in the us or expectation that they would fill anything that is not very very strict and that's why the hanoi meeting ended prematurely because the us insisted on a very strict verification regime it wasn't something that kim jong un was willing to agree to that day and maybe as of today he's still not willing to agree and again that's why the sanctions can continue to be imposed and these are extraordinarily painful sanctions
