for the russell 2, you can flip those around. when you have financial stock underperformance, it is going to be difficult to see small cap leadership. if you see financials lagging, odds are, if you look at the size, you will see the russell 2 underperforming. >> what do you expect people to do? people say, the cycle will last forever. there's a push pull of global geopolitical unrest. alec: i think the big catalyst is really recession in terms of blowing up the spreads and giving problems for credit. we can argue about whether the earnings growth level justifies valuations, but at this point, there is no credible recession case for the u.s.. that is the forecast horizon until you see that, there is no catalyst for a major drawdown. i think investors should sit tight. that said, given valuations, they should expect more upside. leading equities, something like high yield, that moves off of recession risk. as long as you are in an expansion, the credit investor doesn't mind. a lot of people who don't want to deal with those equity

the russell hasn't made of progress to the high time highs. but you are seeing on the surface new 20-day high list, starting to expand you are crossing the 35% threshold there. 35% of issues in the russell are now making one-month highs this is generally a good thing when you look at the returns in the russell over the next six to 12 months. so if history is any guide, if this internal expansion we are seeing within the index is any guide, we could see a catch-up in small caps over the next number of months. >> because the gap, jeff, between the small caps and the s&p 500, i don't know if it has never been wider, but it is really wide in terms of the performance over the last year or so. they're just doing this. >> that's exactly right. i think a lot has to do with the interest rate environment we have been in and what is happening to banks i think it has been a big driver again, i don't know it is a commentary on the broader market, but to your point it only happened three times. it is very, very unusual for the gap to be this wide, but histo
