it is easy to look at the dispute between russell kirk and frank meyer. frank meyer as a libertarian gave kirk a negative a book review for the conservative mind in 1955, a few years after the conservative mind was published. that poisoned the well forevermore. i think meyer was not aware of how much offense he was giving to kirk, and kirk was wounded by it. there was a period when kirk had strong libertarian leanings. he was somewhat of a disciple of albert j. knock. he wrote his first book on an eccentric ultra jeffersonian of the early republic who in many ways could be considered a libertarian hero. well, libertarian, conservative or however you want to label russell kirk, he was a staunch opponent of the welfare state. it was because he saw it as muscling out and taking the place of real civil society and real families. and i think right now, this is a hypothesis, but my guess is he would still adhere to that view and say that the elements within global capitalism, if that's what we have is still global capitalism and not the managerial state, but if
