the part of more churchgoing evangelical women, but i think you see it in the difference between russell moore is been very critical of trump and the pastor of the first baptist church in dallas where he gave a sermon, i don't want want to misrepresent him, but it was essentially that these are tough times, we are on the ropes, we are being pushed out of a culture and sometimes you need a strong and perfect hand to defend us, and i think that some of them call them the nostalgia rotors but they are people who believe things are so messed up that we are willing to risk a guy like trump because that's what it takes to preserve our role in this. lastly, whatever you are talking about white voters, i say that as a white voter, there is always an element of race that has been in this picture throughout the history of our republic and there has been a certain movement of white voters away from the party since the civil rights era, and not just clearly is part of this story. it's not to say these people are racist. i'm not saying that. i'm just saying if you ignore the role of race, you can't underst

russell moore is not among them. he's with the southern baptist ethics and joins me now.ng us. i wonder when you heard donald trump say what he said on that bus 11 years ago, what went through your mind? and did it surprise you at all? >> i didn't think that i could possibly be surprised by anything happening in this campaign, and i was genuinely stunned to hear this. and what i found, if the days since, i'm hearing from a lot of evangelical women, who were already deeply disturbed by the tenor of this campaign and the sort of thing that we've seen go on, who are almost traumatized, by the -- not just what's happening at the national level, but the way that some people are simply waving it off. we see that today. with people saying, it's locker room talk or just being macho or it's being an alpha male. that is completely contrary to everything we believe as christians about the dignity of women and the way that we ought to respect and treat women. and it ought to be contrary to everything we believe as americans. >> it is interesting, because there are evangelical leaders

i think after this election can steer the party and the movement in the right directio moment, russell moore, we have an election going on, and you have a speaker of the house who won't defend donald trump and mitch mcconnell won't say his name. how do you see things? >> well, i think that's exactly what we see at the grassroots level. even when i'm talking to people who support donald trump, they do so with a conflicted conscience, and they do so with a certain sense of fear and trembling. but many of them are doing so that i talk to right now, especially evangelical christian, not because they think he'll win. they think he'll lose, but against a hillary clinton presidency, which will be awful and disastrous for many of the things that we're concerned about. one of the things that concerns me is the personal and spiritual devastation that we see happening in this election. there are friendships that have broken apart. there are husbands and wives who don't speak to each other about the election right now. and there are people who are going through a genuine sense of despair about the futur
