elliott russo is an author and survivor. he taught us that whoever survives the test, whatever it may be, must tell the story. that is why in part we are here today. when hiv started in 1981, i was 23 years old. i was in my first job and i was a journalist here in washington writing about health care policy. who knew? and i wrote some of the earlier news stories about a disease that didn't have a name or didn't have a decent name for a period of time. i never thought that 30 years later i would still be working in some or part of my life on this epidemic, not just working but living through 30 years with so many people. and i am glad. i'm glad that i am, not because of the epidemic has lasted this long but because it is change my life the way i'm sure it is change the lives of everybody in this room, for the worse but worst but also for the better. so one of the things we need to do was remember and not forget of what the secretary or reminded us. there is a generation of people who left grown up in this world never knowing
