they use ropes to blast across the valley, suspended by ancient rusting pulleys. it takes around thirty seconds to fly from one side to the other. by foot it would be an hour mission, hiking up steep trails. the yungas valleys in bolivia are like a sudden staircase between the towering culdieres of the andes more than thirteen thousand feet high and the green amazon basin. with the harsh steep terrain here, the locals have created this unusual way to move around quickly. they trust their lives to thin metal wires that are normally used for fencing and they stretch them as far across as fifteen hundred feet. it's like a form of public transport. there are about twenty of these cables strung across the valley. all day long, people and goods fly across the river, seven hundred feet below. the ends are tied with these messy looking knots that in theory provide stability and safety. some of the wires have been in use for twenty years and have seriously slackened. but the cocaleros have never bothered replacing them. to prevent the pulleys coming loose, they use string
