i want to bring in "washington post" columnist ruth marcus and ryan grim.good to see you both. >> good morning. >> the nra said and i'm quoting here, we were disappointed with how little this meeting had to do with keeping our children safe and how much it had to do with an agenda to attack the second amendment. ruth, nobody thought the nra would come out of this meeting and say we've totally changed our minds, but how much of the white house strategy has to be about the nra? >> well, yesterday's meeting wasn't as much a meeting as it was a big of kabuki theater, the white house needed to make it appear they have gone throw the motions of listening to the nra and nra to go through the motions of considering. the nra is a potent political force, it has money and members. and particularly in house districts, members need to worry about their nra rating and whether they are going to pardon the pun, be in the crosshairs in the next election. the white house needs to worry -- it's not going to get the nra on its side but it needs to figure out a way to neutraliz

and here to tell you a little bit more about community works is ruth morgan, so help me welcome ruth morgan. thank you. . >> thank you. i do hope that if you haven't seen the exhibit, you will go up to the skylight gallery and see it. the project actually involved over 225 young people who studied the japanese internment through the personal stories of 15 people who were interned or impacted by the internment. and the exhibition highlights the individual stories of each of the japanese americans who came into the classroom, as well as the rich student responses to these stories. the project really gave the students space to make very meaningful connections between the historical event of the japanese internment and contemporary and historical instances of social injustice in america today. but we're here today to meet phillip and chloe, so i want to introduce you to them. phillip also was one of the gracious japanese americans who came into the classroom and told his story. phillip congatonda went to law school and graduated hastings law school but never actually practiced law. he be

ruth is a deputy director of consumer action.org. happy monday, ruth?, will. >> your group is an advocate for consumer rights. let me start with the broad question here. where do you stand on this surcharge? do you use plastic? >> first of all, we're not sure we're going to see too many of these chars popping up. at least not yet but we feel that the surcharges could end up being what amounts to double billing. the costs per pay -- for paying processing fees are built into the price and we don't think it's necessary to surcharge nor do we see -- think we will see a lot of it. >> do they fear a backlash from customers? >> that is possible. >> we're not hearing about the stores doing it right now, although they can and they are now allowed to charge a surcharge. what is more likely is that we might see it creep in overtime and maybe with the smaller, very small retailers. >> so, if we do see a 4% surcharge or anything like it, it's for credit cards like visa and mastercard? a debit card couldn't count, right? >> right. and you have to be notified up front
