george rutherford, an expert on infectious diseases at ucsf. he believes it's okay for cities and counties to slowly ease the mandates. >> reporter: thank you for joining us. san francisco just announced it is easing the indoor mask role for offices and gyms. marin county is also using their restrictions. is this a good sign that we are headed in the right direction, and do you think this is a good time to actually implement the changes? >> these are relatively minor changes, with relatively little risk. it is basically easing mask restrictions the same way we had earlier on for kind of places where we know everybody is up to date on their vaccines, like gyms and offices. i think it is okay. it's not going, i don't see it causing really anything in the way of problems. >> reporter: some counties are concerned about case rates, hospitalizations being high. can you put that into perspective? where are we now, and how cautious do we have to be? >> absolutely. the curve is very symmetrical. just because we are past the peak, doesn't mean that half

george rutherford says there risk of myocarditis from the booster is overstated and says it should be referred to as a third dose, and not a booster. >> booster is really not a booster per se. it is the third dose of a three dose series. 10 years from now when we are giving this is a routine vaccination, we will think of it as a three dose series that you get at zero, 1, and 6 months, just like we get a hepatitis vaccine, as an example. the idea that this is an optional booster to booster immunity is not incorrect. you need this to complete the series. >> reporter: fisher has posted a change.org petition online with nearly 2000 signatures and is gaining traction on social media. in a statement to kpix 5, stanford said this about the booster mandates. it will help us continue in- person educational activities and puts us in a better position to deal with the risk of future variance, especially in our students living in congregant facilities. >> reporter: stanford is not alone in their booster or third shot mandate. many universities have joined the ranks. the deadline is january 31st.
