we can't say for sure what ryan meant there. them honest the election day picture was a bit more complicated than that. turnout among african-american voters was up this year and turnout was up in swing state cities but down in others. and the presidents win was not solely dependent on black or urban voters. he also won more than 7 in 10 asian, latino voters, 6 in 10 young voters and 55% of women voters nationwide. what's more, white voters played a big role in the president's re-election. although romney won white voters nationwide the picture isn't quite so clear-cut when you look at swing states. in iowa, wisconsin, new hampshire, colorado and minnesota, president obama did better among white voters than either john kerry or al gore did. president obama won in some key swing states with predominantly white voters. many of them live in the suburbs or rural areas. take iowa, where white voters made up 93% of the electorate. more than half of those voters, 51%, backed president obama to 47% for romney. it was the same breakdown

tonight's question, who is paul ryan going to fight for? text a for the rich, text b for the middle class. you can always go to our blog. we'll bring you results later on in the show. let's bring in bill pascrell of new jersey tonight. also robert riech. gentlemen, great to have you with us tonight. congressman, let's start with you first. what do you expect with paul ryan at the helm of these negotiations? >> it doesn't send -- i'm not frightened about that situation. in fact, one of the things that paul does bring to the table, and i think it's necessary here, ed, is urgency. this is an urgent situation we need to address. if we kick this can down the street, and i would contend that if you do away with all of the bush tax cuts and we supposedly start anew in january or february, i don't think that helps us down the path. i think we could strike a deal to get 218 votes. we need about 30 or 40 votes on the republican side in the house of representatives. this is a time when we have to step up to the plate. >> what do you have to give up to

ryan told abc that the president didn't have a mandate. rather, he and his house gap gop have one.e said i think the ideas we talked about, i think they're popular ideas. did the election not happen? >> when they say they're popular ideas, they believe that -- >> that the electorate dismissed them and did not vote for them. >> but they believe that the issue of the debt is still one that they're very strong on, that people do not like to have the $16 trillion debt, that their policies are the best moving forward. but, look, martin, if anything else what you are seeing here is a very smart political ploy by speaker boehner trying not to allow what happened in august of 2011 to happen again, which is one of his lieutenants not having his back. we saw that with eric cantor back in the summer of 2011. a lot of folks said that eric cantor was not brought in the circle enough with john boehner and was going to scuttle any deal he could have made with the president. so john boehner is doing some sort of, i would say, pre-emptive keeping his friends closer that time around than the last ne

ryan really trying to say here? i would flip it on them and ask them to maybe travel to new jersey, travel to new york, travel to connecticut where we had complete devastation last week with hurricane sandy and the folks that ran immediately into that problem to help, to save lives, to rebuild those communities, were public service workers. that was government at its best. that's what we do. i was in connecticut, al, a couple of days ago and i visited bridgeport, connecticut, where they had a lot of devastation, flooding. homes damaged, homes destroyed. and public service workers, the first responders, police, fire, public works department employees, they were there providing essential services to those citizens that have been affected. i would say to mitt romney and paul ryan, go to those areas and see what government workers do. see what government means in a time of crisis. i was there. you should go. >> now, lee, you've been on the front line, president of the largest municipal county and state union and you've
