eventually gave private ryan high remarks for the opening scenes of private ryan but then wasn't very impressed with the rest of it but he had some -- he paid a tribute to steven ambrose. and his achievements and they are indirectly related to of course private ryan and it was in the same review. and i just read you what fussle said in his tribute and i'm very fresh in my mind since this is the day after our 18th birthday of this museum. he said ambrose devoted his life to learning about war, world war ii in particular. you know, he had never served. he had a tendency to romanticize and fully on board with the good war. ambrose was indeed a popular historian and serious serious military historians were con descending about ambrose as a popularizer but said fussle, he is the very best we have. and americans have learned a great deal that's valuable from him. and his lifetime specialization in the war has resulted in an eminently useful work of art for which we should all be greatfat. thank you. i've seen "saving private ryan" i don't know how many times. every time you watch a great film, you see things you didn't see the last time. we had a podcast here at the museum yesterday in which we talked about the best years of our lives, and that's a film many of us have seen many times about veterans coming home after the war. william wyler, another master of his craft. and every time you see it, little things pop out. for me the last viewing of "saving private ryan," the czech vignette. the german army was having its problems in normandy. kevin mentions the german fear of allied air power. and i can talk about that in a moment. not much in terms of a german navy by this point. there's certainly problems. let's be fair and honest, and this movie is. the german army still contains some very solid, very tough elements. when the allies ran into one of them, there was going to be real trouble. that's precisely what happened on omaha beach. there was an honest-to-god german infantry division, the 352nd, if you have that level of nerdhood, and li

i watched "saving private ryan" at home. at least for the longest day having that map with the five beaches and reminding me where the cities were -- i was in normandy in may so that helped, also. it really gives you a frame of reference to understand what is going on. in the big picture it is really a micropicture thing. omaha beach is presented. the same thing could have been done with a film in the pacific about the carnage of war. the story itself is really largely detached from d-day. the other thing about steamboat willie and the germans i think that episode was made into a larger kwarcharacter, was that e are two harsh lessons in that. one of them is the no good deed goes unpunished. and the other thing the allies did learn that lesson at some point, i would add, because when colonel piper carried out massacres on the second day of the battle of the bulge, for the next two weeks in that sector the allies took no german pri n prison prisoners. he mysteriously died in a suspicious fire in the '70s. in any event -- the o

oh well it's huge damage here being done to ryan air of course ryan air does not at all count as a reliable airline anymore because you just don't know when you book your flight when you book your vacations whether you will ever make the trip but that is not only true for ryan air but mostly this really going to be a problem more and more for those cheap airlines for those no frills airlines and the airlines have to really rethink that business model and see if they can actually keep that going because more and more they realize that they have to pay decent wages that they have to offer reasonable work conditions and of course if you want to do that you cannot get away with the nine year old flight to london and a fifteen year old flight to venice that doesn't work anymore so that whole entire business model for the low cost carriers is actually endangered right now changes ahead for the budget here sector from our lors halter that should tell the airport here in berlin thanks very much. and stay in berlin a new bike lane has made cycling more fun or more hazardous depending on how you look
