let's talk this over with our pentagon reporter, ryan browne. tely different versions of exactly what took place in these conversations between the secretary of state and the north korean delegation. what's going on here? >> reporter: well, absolutely. two very different tones, and two very different statements coming from the u.s. and north korean sides. now, secretary pompeo spoke first but north korea releasing a statement shortly after he spoke saying, you know, calling the u.s. attitude, quote, unquote, regrettable, saying -- accusing the u.s. of pursuing talks with a gangster-like mindset, taking particular issue with this concept of complete, verifiable, irreversible denuclearization up front, saying this was not what they had been thinking about in the talks between trump and chairman kim of north korea. and so they issued this very strongly worded statement which followed secretary of state pompeo who cited a more optimistic tone while speaking to reporters in pyongyang. >> well, your characterization is interesting. we talked about what

cnn's ryan browne is in washington here. so, ryan, you have pompeo saying progress has been made. north korea is essentially criticizing the u.s. how do we balance that out? >> we're hearing very different tones from the north korean and u.s. sides with regards to how these conversations went. now, mike pompeo went first, speaking to reporters there in pyongyang right before boarding his aircraft and he struck a very optimistic tone, saying that both sides agreed on the denuclearization of north korea and were committed to that. >> but what's denuclearization? does anybody know? >> that's the key question here, and i think from the u.s. side, they thought they understood what it meant. they thought it meant inspection of north korean nuclear facilities, concrete steps being taken on the front end. north korea very clear that they want this to be kind of a tit for tat. they want to take steps and see matched by the u.s., different areas, things they've long sought. they said in their statement that they were very much against this idea of complete, verifiable, irreversible denuclea

cnn pentagon reporter ryan browne is here now. , so tell us a little bit about the involvement of the united states in this mission. >> well, u.s. officials are telling me it's very much the thais in the lead. thai navy s.e.a.l.s, thai divers. but there is a significant u.s. military presence on the ground. there's about 30 to 40 u.s. military personnel there, most of them coming from pacific command, coming from japan bases in the region. they're there to support search and rescue ifrefforts. and while u.s. divers did not participate directly in the recovery of these four boys from the cave, u.s. personnel were onsite in a supporting role, prestaging equipment like tanks, as well as providing potential medical support, should anyone need it to support some of the international people that were potentially going to participate in this recovery effort. now, we're told british divers may participate in future recovery efforts. the u.s. would support them with medical support, potentially, if anything were to happen. >> right. so ther

as we await a news conference there, we want to go to cnn's pentagon reporter ryan brown with us on thene. and ryan, you are getting more information about u.s. involvement in this rescue effort. what are you hearing? >> that's right, dana. we know that a significant number of u.s. military and civilian personnel are there on-site in an attempt to aid this rescue effort. we know there are about 36 u.s. military personnel, most of it from the pacific command, which is the command that oversees u.s. forces in the region, and that includes 12 research and rescue divers. we are told the u.s. divers were not directly participating in the initial stages of this rescue effort. we are being told that was led by thai divers. but we do know that u.s. divers and other u.s. officials helped brief this really risky rescue plan to thai officials when it was first proposed. this is kind of a buddy dive that some more experienced divers would go into the cave and take the boys with them as they swam out. it was considered risky but the best option given the challenges of the cave. u.s. divers did not p

let's talk it over will ryan brown. how are you -- what's going on?ndamental disagreement about what exactly denuclearization of north korea means. you saw the statement -- you referenced the statement from north korea, were gangster-like, and those demands include what they want was the complete verifiable, irreversible denuclearization, and what assets north korea possesses. he took issue with that. most arms experts thinking those things are fundamental to any real agreement that rids north korea of its arsenal. on the other side you heard a much more optimistic tone, that both sides remained committed, in additional meetings and talks would continue -- hard to see how they reconciled that. the north koreans did say they had their faith and confidence in donald trump, references his confidence, so seemingly while they expressed concern and complaints with regards to secretary pompeo, move this thing forward. we'll have to see where it goes from here. >> the disconnect, probably not encouraging, but these talks will continue. >>> meanwhile, presiden
